Double Majoring In History And Japanese Plus A Minor In Spanish And Master

Is Japanese a useless language to learn?

I used to really want to learn it because I am a second generation Japanese-American, but even my own family discouraged it. My parents always tell me that Japanese is a useless language outside of Japan, and that knowing Japanese wouldn't give me any advantage in interviews. Every one else I've asked in real life basically told me the same thing, but my friends added that it would be a disadvantage in professional inteviews; they said that they would think I was obsessed with anime if I learned Japanese... I don't like anime at all and I probably won't visit Japan too much (a few times over the years to see my family maybe), so can Japanese still be useful for me?

P.s. Please don't trash my friends; they weren't criticizing me or making fun of me, they were just giving their honest insight on what they would think of someone who focused on Japanese specifically.

My College major and minor choices with language and business. What should I choose?

Businesses like to hire people with degrees outside the business major. If you plan to get that MBA and M.A. later, then your original major won't be as important. The two semesters abroad will have much more influence with people you want to hire you than will your domestic internship, or a BS in Business. And if you plan to go into international business, demonstrating fluency in those languages will be extremely helpful. Semesters abroad do wonders for fluency.

I suggest you look at some job listings out there that interest you, or some companies you might wish to work for in the future. Contact their human resources department and talk to the person in charge of hiring for the area you are interested in. Ask them what they would prefer. Tell them you are a college student interested in working for them in the future, and then ask the question.

Good luck and enjoy your time abroad.

What is a good minor for a pharmacy major?

Two options: pursue something that will allow you to advance in health care. Management, business, public health, economics, etc. Or, take something that you simply enjoy to make you a well rounded person and allow you to feel complete.

What would you think of a white person who majored in African American studies at college?

I work in Student Affairs at a large university. I've been doing this for the past 6 years and working on year 7. I'm familiar with student development theory.  Every year, students come into my office and they want to talk.  I talk to them, because as a Student Affairs professional my job is to connect with students. The talk is sometimes about that student who studies what their parents want them to study. And while passion can be overrated, there's something to be said about having a teacher or someone who is passionate about their work.  If everyone pursued degrees in fields  that were "lucrative" then we would lose out on those who move us forward academically, creatively...  you get the picture. If a white person wants to study African American studies, that's a great start to firing up some minds about African American history.  That's usually how that goes.

What are some good double majors to do with elementary education and why are they useful?

Rather than double majoring, I suggest increasing the number of endorsements on your certification. An endorsement is sort-of an area of specialization. There are some districts that won’t even look at your resume if you don’t have an endorsement in reading, so get that.Science is an area where elementary schools are notoriously weak, so getting a science endorsement will give you an edge. Many schools are talking about making their students “future-ready.” There’s a push to begin teaching kids the basics of coding. An endorsement in technology and media would be very helpful. If you enjoy sports, consider a coaching endorsement. The demands of being an elementary classroom teacher are incredibly high. Teachers who have additional certifications are eligible for specialty positions like interventionists. These positions are usually highly desirable after a few years in the general classroom.
