Edit Abnormal Behavior In My Dog

Can some animals (like cats and dogs) sense paranormal activity (like spirits)?

I may not exactly answer your question, but I would like to tell one incident which I have witnessed and unexplainable. It happened at least 10yrs ago. I was waiting for my cab and 10 minutes early to my pickup point beside me there was one street dog. It was sleeping /resting.. I didn't give any attention to it. I was able to have a look at least more than 200 mtrs distance to check whether my cab is coming.. Due to little downwards of road, there was a good view from where I was standing.. Then something unexplainable happened..The dog beside me which was resting stood up and started barking towards road turning little right side. I was checking why it is barking, I didn't find any reason, there was no other dog, beggar or unusual things to bark at and the dog face was pointed at the road end… Then I checked what unusual in the road end, any dog traps van ( it was common those days) but nothing even at far distance I was able to see no such vehicles I was totally confused.. It didn't stop barking…Then…After 2 minutes I found one vehicle coming at far distance of the road, but still I couldn't find what was it since it was too far.. The vehicle came close to us in the road.then only I realized that it was a van with dead body.. ( what you call can't remember) as the vehicle passed the dog position also changed it was barking at that vehicle it turned completely looking at that vehicle.. I was SHOCKED…how this dog able to predict the vehicle so early which was not even able to see at the fog end of the road which was not even was there in the road.. It was barking at it.. Couple of minutes even before that vehicle in the scene.. At fog end of the road. I witnessed some unexplainable and I never forget this incident and the power of dogs.and for your clarification once the vehicle left it again stopped howling and rested..I said everyone in my family about it.If someone can explain me, I welcome you.Thanks.EDIT : I can say HOWLING instead of barking ( I am not that good at English)

How are mental disorders in dogs diagnosed?

Can a dog have any of these mental disorders where there is no physical cause (such as cancer or a thyroid disorder) and no environmental factors (like abuse/neglect) influencing them:

1. schizophrenia
2. ADD/ADHD
3. anorexia
4. bipolar

My (maybe ignorant?) answer is "of course they can't..."

but then, why can dogs get any mental illness? Such as rage syndrome, chemical depression, chemical anxiety disorder , and over compulsive disorder/OCD?

just trying to understand how mental illness gets diagnosed in dogs? To me, I can't see any dog having a real chemical imbalance. Even genetic aggression, is a temperament that's been passed on, brought on by a pregnant mother in stress or removed too early from mom/litter, or caused by abuse/forced fighting.

so how can a dog can have OCD but not bipolar? how is a mental disorder even diagnosed in dogs, how are you able to tell it's OCD and not lack of exercise or good training, for example?

My dog always makes noises when we hold her?

I have a 6.5 year old female papillon who we bought from her breeder as a puppy. I've noticed within the past year that whenever we pick her up and hold her, she makes noticeable moans and groans, and her breathing changes. It seems like she's in distress but I can't understand why.

She is overweight and has a bum knee, but she can run and chase my cats and her toys just fine. What's wrong? Why does she make such weird noises every single time we pick her up? By the way, she continues to make these noises until we put her down.

Can animals die from depression?

In research trials, they sometimes try to induce depression in lab rats by making them believe they have no control over what happens to them (i.e. administering random small electric shocks with no way for the animals to avoid or forsee them). Soon the rats start behaving like a depressed person behaves, they stop moving around so much and the food they used to enjoy before won't even get touched anymore. It's not like the human kind of depression though, they have just learned to expect nothing good from life.Another way to induce depression-like behaviour is to force the animals to swim for a long time. At a certain point their response is to become immobile when immersed in a water container and researchers call this 'behavioural despair'. When given antidepressants, they start actively performing escape-directed behaviours for a while.EDIT: this response was for the first version of the question, which inquired about the evidence of depressive behaviour in animals.

Why is my dog scratching on my bed and couch?

I've noticed that when my dog settles in for a good nap on my bed when I'm not in my room I hear scratching noises coming from in there. Just now, she was scratching with her front paws on my couch while my boyfriend was sitting next to her. Anyone know why she is scratching on my bed and couch and then laying down on that spot? Is this an unnatural behavior? Can I get her to stop and how?

She's a yellow lab, around 3 1/2 years old, spayed if that helps!

My dog (yorkie) is always scratching his ears but when I take him to the vet they say nothing is wrong (no infection, etc.). What could it be?

Pull (no cut) inner ear hair, keep it clean.Clean the inner of the ear with a soft cloth embedded with few drops of baby oil and distilled water. It will keep it a little moist and fresh. Do it once a day. Do not use cotton swabs. You can go as deep as your finger cat go with the cloth.Sound. Dogs also scratch ears when there are high frequency sounds in the house and he can not find a place quiet. Many things can generate high frequency sounds, ultrasound. I found a small fluorescent lamp, with electronic power supply making my dogs crazy. I only found it with a program (Android app) that shows sound in the frequency range up to 30kHz and amplitude. The noise appeared as a pick around 22kHz, totally abnormal. So I went walking inside my home with the cell phone, and like a radar I follow where it was louder… Found the lamp in a minute, turning it off the pick of loud sound (that I couldn't hear it) just disappeared on the screen. The dogs became happier. Take your dog out of home, to a quiet place, perhaps a park, let him relax, see if he scratches the ear there. If he does not, it is something inside your home. Dogs don't like loud sound, do you play loud music? Is there any construction around? Remember, dogs can hear very much better than you, specially high frequencies. Two years ago, I was playing in develop a device that could measure distances using those Chinese ultrasound transducers… poor dogs, I only realize how bad it was to the dogs a day later… when the 3 small dogs (lhasa apso) were hiding in the far bedroom…

My dog won't stop shaking!!?

I have a two year old rat terrier by the name of Cricket. He shakes sometimes too. He just wants you to hold him. They are very affectionate dogs and very protective. We have other dogs also and when I bring the groceries in Cricket will sit right there until I'm through bringing them all in and dare another dog to come over by them. When I'm holding him sometimes he won't even let my husband touch me. They are just little babies know matter how old they are. They shake when the want some attention and they shake when they are scared about something........
