Elastics On Gum For Braces

Can you chew gum with elastic bands on your bracesss?

Are you suppose to chew gum with braces? No! But does everyone chew it including me? Of course! Haha just take out the bands I'm getting bands next week but my best friend has bands and she just takes them out or sometime just chew the gum it's no big deal I it does break it just put a new band in...

How can I treat pain caused by my braces' elastics?

You can use regular painkillers. The same you would use for a headache for example. But don’t expect the pain to go away, specially if it is very strong. You should always give feedback to your dentist with the amount of pain you have, and he will prescribe the propper medication. If it hurts too bad, he probably went a little too far tightening the braces and elastics. The problem is that it will not hurt that bad at the time, it starts to ache about 1h later.Freezing cold water also helps. I use to keep a huge glass in my desk and drank it continuously to soothe the pain. I never liked to take meds.

Braces: Box elastics on front teeth?

Elastics, or any other orthodontic parts are not supposed to put pressure on the gum tissues. If there's not enough room for the elastic to be placed without pinching the gum, your orthodontist needs to find a way to engage it from a different portion of the bracket or wire. Box elastics are not common and your orthodontist is the best person to talk about this. Make sure you get it right before you leave his/her office, the success of the treatment depends on it.

Elastics cutting my gums?

Looking at the diagram you supplied, I believe the putting the elastics above your brackets will effect the purpose of having the elastics on. I cannot personally see your mouth and situation you are in but from the information you supplied us with, I'd say you should call your orthodontist and explain what the problem is. Elastics are not supposed to cut your gums and not be so tight. Perhaps you are simply putting them on incorrectly as well.

Your safest bet is to call your orthodontist and explain your problem and if necessary, go in for an appointment.

Swollen GUms (braces)?

Gum swelling is very common while wearing braces, especially when your braces are adjusted or you start a new protocol (like elastics). It should only occur for the first few days after a tightening or a change in procedure.

Try using a salt water rinse for the swelling. Dissolve 1/2 tsp of table salt in a cup of warm water. Swish in your mouth for one minute, then spit out. Do this each night before bed, and the swelling should subside. If your gums are still swollen and not going down after 4 or 5 days, you need to go back in and see your orthodontist, because something else may be wrong.

Why do my gums hurt when wearing elastics?

Because we are creating an additional force.

Are the elastic bands used with braces supposed to hurt so much? I usually wear them at night, but the pain is excessive and when I remove them after approximately 6 hours, it hurts and my gums are bleeding. Is it something I have to get used to?

Your gums should not be bleeding from rubber bands. Tell your orthodontist about the bleeding. Are you taking any medications? Some cause gum problems.Take a pain reliever, Tylenol, ibuprofen, aspirin, or such. The pain is usualy uncomfortable and more so when trying to sleep because you have no distractions. It may be better to wear them during the day when you have lots of distractions.

I just got elastics for my braces. Is it normal to experience excruciating pain once I put new bands in?

I’ve never had elastics, only the usual wires and BOY DID THEY HURT!  Okay, maybe I was, and still am, a pussy, but after they were placed for the first time, I couldn’t eat anything solid for over a week. I survived on yogurt, milk, juice and soup. Even the pressure of my lips over the teeth was enough to cause a steady stream of pain (in addition to the dull constant pain). Plus, this happened at the start of summer break and my most favorite hobby at the time was snorkeling at the beach. I was all gloomy because of the pain but once we got to the beach the day after getting braces I began to cheer up. Ate my yogurt with fruit bits, put on my flippers, my nose plug, my water goggles… then I tried to get the snorkeling tube in my mouth! For those who don’t know, the snorkeling tube goes partially into your mouth and is held in place by your clenched teeth. I cried for the rest of the day, because the most vital part of my snorkeling gear was suddenly causing me excruciating pain! I couldn’t eat and I couldn’t snorkel, my summer was officially over! I sulked for most of the next 3 months… And the worst part was that every time it began to feel alright, I had to go to the dentist change the wires or replace a fallen bracket and THE PAIN WOULD COME RIGHT BACK!!!!!! Worst 2 years of my life.
