Engine Modification Ticket

Can you modify a car engine for use in an airplane?

Yes.My buddy, Don, put a Subaru engine is his Super Zodiac.Tweetie has over 500 hours in the air and I’ve flown with Don many times over the years……off a little grassy knoll in the middle of a pine forest that is east Texas. The runway occurs as mighty big on take off.On landing, not so much… more like what landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier would be, though mercifully there’s no pitching or rolling of the little green postage stamp of a strip.Good thing it’s not the other way around, or I’d still be an experimental plane flight virgin! And, no, Don does not have a Subaru with an aircraft engine in it.Tally ho

What kind of modifications do cop cars have, to get an advantage over regular cars? What kind of engines do most police cars Have? Do police cars have better tires for better traction? Do they use consumer fuel or some special brand?

Cop cars actually have disadvantages over “civilian” models, like that big sail we call a light bar sitting in the roof, maybe a heavy push bumper sticking out the front, and 250 pounds of cop gear in the trunk (I totally made that number up, but it’s a lot of gear, anyway). There are only two advantages which are common:The electronic governor which makes most modern cars stop accelerating at some particular speed, like 115 mph, for example, is usually disabled in a cop car.The driver. Car chases usually end when the suspect crashes, and that usually happens before the cop crashes. Not always, but usually. I had a guy in a minivan absolutely smoke me one time. I mean, I had no chance at all to keep up with him. Turns out he was an amateur race car driver, far more skilled than me at driving. He was miles ahead of me by the time he wrecked his van.Tires may be one small advantage worth mentioning. The “racing tires” with extra traction usually wear out much faster than ordinary “touring” tires. So, we don’t get those. However, we do get tires with ordinary traction but high speed ratings. That means our tires are designed to not fly apart at extreme speeds, like 135 mph, for example. Not all tires have such a high speed rating, and that factor does end the occasional car chase.I haven't done a real high-speed pursuit in years though. They're against our departmental policy in all but the most extreme cases nowadays. Zoom away from me on an attempted traffic stop, and I will literally pull off on a side road or do a U-turn and go the other way.

What are the car modification laws in California?

Here's a basic rundown.

Headlights can't be below a certain height (I believe 15") or above a certain height (not applicable, unless you're putting a 12" lift and 38" tires on a civic).
Aftermarket HIDs are illegal.
Additional external lighting is legal, just cannot be on while the car is in motion and the bulbs cannot be seen from outside the car (IE underchassis lights)
Body kits, custom work, and bad taste aren't illegal, but they are common.
Any engine modifications that aren't exhaust from the catalytic converter back require a California Air Research Board (C.A.R.B. EO) Executive Order number, or it's illegal for a car to be driven on the street.
Engine swaps are legal, as long as the new engine is the same age as the car or newer, and all the emissions equipment is present that is more strict, whether it's what came with the car or what comes with the engine (IE, if you put an engine in a car that came with a smog pump, and the engine didn't have a smog pump, you have to retrofit the smog pump to the new engine). Also, engine swaps must be inspected by "smog referees" who will judge the legality of the swap. Visiting these refs will also help, because they are familiar with the swaps and can tell you what you are missing to have a legal car.

Classic cars (built before I think 1973) are exempt from just about all these (engine/emissions related, anyways). You can put any engine in, do not have to pass emissions, can do whatever you want pretty much. So, to be a street legal with an import, if you can hit 12s, you've got a fast car. With a 1960s American car, you could have an 8 second car and be street legal. Guess there really is no replacement for cubic inches and rear wheel drive.

51 plymouth engine swap?

For the cost involved to swap the motor and transmission, including some special labor to weld in different motor mounts, and make sure that steering gear fits around everything and brakes and suspension are up to spec to handle the additional load, you could easily spend enough money to just buy something newer and faster, if "being fast" is what you are all about.

What you have is a classic that kept in 50's style may be good for local car shows. If you want to show the car, it garners more respect and following if you can either keep it original, or only make the modifications that would have been typically made in the 50s era. Skip the 20" mag wheels for example, that just looks stupid.

I'll be honest, I'm tending to disrespect folks that put Chevy 350s into non-chevy cars. So if you have to put in a V8, make it a MOPAR 318 or 360. Basically you need to pick up a donor Dodge pickup, and you'll steal the engine, transmission, rearend and possibly some other bits and pieces to make it all work.

Illegal Engine Swap (CALIFORNIA)?

lf you mean the engine doesn't have the proper emissions equipment for the year of the vehicle or is using parts meant for off road or track use only you risk being cited for what ever equipment violations they find in the event you get pulled over. However what usually happens is eventually you'll have to get the car's emissions checked at a state required smog check and it won't pass. So you won't be able to register it.

In order to comply with California emission standards you'll have to remove and replace all non CARB approved parts and modifications. Persist in driving the car on expired tags and you'll be cited, fined and risk having the car confiscated and sold at public auction.

If caught street racing and your car doesn't have matching serial numbers and you can't prove where the parts came from it will be impounded and eventually destroyed. In this case you also risk being prosecuted for possession of stolen property on top the penalties you already face for a speed contest citation.

How do i prevent too much air from going into the engine of my car?

I own a 2003 Pontiac Grand AM SE1. I ran a scan and it said there is too much air going into the engine making it lean. The only mod i have on the car is Weapon-R Secret Weapon Ram Air. It says it could also be the MAF or maybe an oil change? I am also losing tons of gas.
