IB English Extended Essay help!?

Literature displays flaw in utopian societies by suggesting that its impossible. As much as we try to be equal, kind, or flawless in our own world, it will never happen. As long as there is human nature, this will be imperfection.

Fahrenheit 451 is about a society that burns books. The prospect of people thinking for themselves is forbidden and therefore knowledge (books) are destroyed.

In Brave New World, people are created the way Society wants, and they're all born in incubators. They follow the same routine every day and are essentially clones.

Anthem by Ayn Rand is about people who's lives/jobs are pre-chosen, and whatever is decided by the overlying authority will be assumed by you to live for the rest of your life. You also have no name, and are grouped with other people under a number and a word. (Equality 7-2521)

1984 is very similar to Fahrenheit 451. You are not allowed to think for yourself, and if you do, you are caught by the Thought Police and punished. To be a free thinker is to be condemned.

All of these books are people who have tried to create a utopian society and ultimately failed. In general message given out by these stories is that you can try as you may to create a perfect world, but you can't necessarily destroy human nature. Human Nature, which is by no means perfect or Utopia-esque at all. While attempting to create perfection, they created a dystopia. The opposite affect.

As for Lord of the Flies, (since you've read it) encompasses the fact that man without law will eventually become degenerate. As you see in the book, the conch shell symbolized the humane society the boys had created, but it broke and bit by bit the boys eventually turned to savage, wild ways. Suggesting that beneath the skin of all men, is the wild nature we would otherwise use to survive in harsh conditions.

I would suggest trying for an essay that draws from the message of all of the previous mentioned novels. It gives you a lot to work off of. You'd be using both your interpretations and the method of compare and contrast.

Anyways, all of those are really good books. And in your spare time you should read them.

i've only read the handmaid's tale. that is a futuristic tale where the united states has become controlled by religious fundamentalists. women become the property of men because if you interpret the bible literally it is a quite sexist document where women are literally the property of men.

one idea from that novel might be that men use the bible and religion as a way to subjugate women. or that the bible was written at a time when women were treated badly and that it is absurd to use that book as a way to guide behavior between men and women today.

che was a socialist of course. a socialist believes that the state should control all means of production (i.e. all the factories). whatever wealth is generated by the means of production should be distributed equally among all people.

in the united states we are a capitalist country where private citizens (i.e. bill gates) own factories and whatever they sell they make profits from and they keep all the profits themselves.

so the big philosophy that che had would be: the state should create all goods and distribute the profits among everyone equally.

he would also believe that all people are equal and should ahve equal rights and that everyone deserves a good and free education and free medical care.

you might want to just google: che philosophy for more...

I took Russian history in college and thought this was interesting about Stalin. I would do the extended essay on the methods used by Stalin to be the leader of Russia for so long.

A good example is how Stalin made people disappear from all walks of life, such as factory workers, artists, generals, teachers, janitors, etc.... He did this so every type of group you can think of in Russian society wondered what happen to their associate. It didn't matter how unimportant or important a person was, because they could disappear. It was called the "Great Purge".

The Great Purge was a series of campaigns of political repression and persecution in the Soviet Union orchestrated by Joseph Stalin from 1936 to 1938.[1][2] It involved a large-scale purge of the Communist Party and government officials, repression of peasants, Red Army leadership, and the persecution of unaffiliated persons, characterized by widespread police surveillance, widespread suspicion of "saboteurs", imprisonment, and executions.[1] In Russian historiography the period of the most intense purge, 1937–1938, is called Yezhovshchina (Russian: Ежовщина; literally, the Yezhov regime), after Nikolai Yezhov, the head of the Soviet secret police, NKVD.

The methods he used were very brutal and some historians estimate that he possibly killed over 45 million Russians during his reign!!!

English Extended Essay Help!?

I'm also an IB student writing my extended essay in English. I plan on just using one book, but lots of other sources I found online, through avl and college/university websites. There are many themes in the Scarlet Letter, you have to be much more specific. Also, google IS NOT the way to look up information. IB does not encourage that, you MUST have legit, citable sources, from credited authors. You could write a four thousand word essay on the Scarlet Letter if you found a theme that was universal. Since I'vee read the book twice, I know that there are themes that would make a good thesis for the extended essay. The other answerer makes some good points, but he or she must understand, since we're in IB, we're definitely not at the "high school" level. We are at a college level, and because of that, IB expects our work to be at the college level. Good luck on the EE, I'll be working on mine at the same time as you, so any more questions, just ask!

IB Extended Essay - English - Topic ideas?

I'm in my first year of college studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma and we have to write a 4000 word essay. My subject of choice is English, but I'm stuck on a topic!
My first thought was to write something along the lines of how language has changed over time: Shakespearean English compared with Modern Day English.
However I have been looking round the internet for ideas and someone inspired the wonderful idea of writing about fictional heroes. (eg Harry Potter). Since I love to read and write, the idea of writing about my favourite characters greatly appeals to me, but I need helping thinking of a title.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

English extended essay!!!?

Much of the novel is concerned with Paul’s relationship with women, most importantly his mother, Miriam, and Clara. Examine Paul’s interactions with the other male characters in the novel. Consider his father, his brothers, Mr. Pappleworth, Edgar Leivers, Baxter Dawes.

What is the IB extended essay? Is it similar to, say an English Macbeth essay with a theme and relations to the world today? Can you give some ideas for an EE (science subject)?

Extended Essay is one of the core in IB, a mandatory component for candidates to be awarded with the IB diploma. It is somewhat similar to the example you have provided in the question, but it’s more than just an essay; extended essay is an independent research that you need to write up to 4,000 words with in-depth investigation on the topic of your interest. It’s kinda similar to doing a thesis in undergraduate research in a way.Considering that I didn’t do an EE on science subject (heck, I don’t even like any of the science subjects), I don’t know any suggestions for it. But what I do know was that most EE with science subject requires experiment (like my friend did), though it might not require for all; it depends on what your extended essay is about. Perhaps you can get some advice from this website: The Complete IB Extended Essay Guide: Examples, Topics, and Ideas. This website helps me a lot on what I should do in my extended essay.Hopefully this answer the question :)

Extended Essay Topic Ideas for IB?

If you're interested in astronomy, check out http://www.galaxyzoo.org -- the scientists there could be willing/able to help you find a topic that's at the right level for an Extended Essay. Probably not by tomorrow, but you might be able to get a general idea of what kinds of astronomy questions you'd like the answer to from joining the site, reading the forums, and trying a bit of your own classification of galaxy morphologies.

Galaxy Zoo is a scientific collaboration between astronomers and the general public to classify all the galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. They will eventually (and may have already, I haven't checked lately) branch out to other surveys as well. And the Sloan Digital Sky Survey has great publicly-available tools for scientists and non-scientists to use. You can download your own data and work with it for your project.

I am writing my extended essay in English and have picked a book and question. The problem is that the book has 'stories within stories' and I don't know how to link this with my EE question. What should I look for while reading, and how can I ensure that I have enough analysis covering 4000 words?

Since you did not provide any information on the book you’ve chosen nor your EE topic, it is difficult to give you advice on approaching the book - in the end those are the substantial factors that everything else depends on.Frame narratives (or ‘stories within stories’) is a literary device that can convey multiple layers/dimensions of themes, meanings or messages. So perhaps a tip for you can be to look out for different styles, varied uses of language, and/or different/consistent themes in the multiple ‘nested stories’, and more specifically to look at how they correlate/correspond to each other. As these stories are part of a literary work presented as an entity, they should, and are meant to, interact to bring out a bigger message.Of course, in the end all your analyses should answer to the overarching question. So do consider all the aspects/ways in which you can analyse the book when crafting your research question - and do amend it whenever needed in order to fit your analysis. And don’t worry about the word count - you will always manage to get there, be it from above or below.(I did my EE on English Literature and got a 36/36.)
