English takes a huge part of time for Chinese students in almost all stages of their education. The typical model of Chinese education is exam-oriented, and English takes an important part in National College Entrance Examination and Postgraduate Entrance Examination.Large part of students are tormented. They spend large part of time figuring out details of grammer and tiny differences between two words which are forgotten quickly after the exams are passed due to lack of matched practices in writing and speaking. They read a lot, primarily in the form of daily self-testing putting emphasis on guessing the preference of the guy setting the testing questions.Though they are struggling all the time, their performances are usually not good. The guys with good performance are usually indeed talented and spend lots of time in self-learning. They fail to express their ideas smoothly in front of a foreinger. Their writing are basically simple and crappy(like me). Their attitudes towards English learning are opportunistic, desperately for the only aim — higher scores. Ironically, their English teaching in its very nature is fostering English linguists not daily users.It’s pity that so large part of talented students in science and art fails in their schoolwork and couldn’t get good opportunities for further study in which they are not required to be linguists.
