Did the Vala Varda place secrets in her stars and/or constellations?
Tolkien mixes myth and science pretty thoroughly when it comes to astronomy. On the one hand you have dilemmas like how the hell did plants grow to feed animals and elves without sunlight? There are also constellations set as signs, like the Sickle of the Valar (probably the Big Dipper) and Menelvagor (Menelmacar) unmistakably Orion. The behavior of Vingilot and Elwing in The Silmarillion mirrors that of Venus and Mercury. There is also the whole flat/round world issue as well.Tolkien famously kept a chart of lunar phases in his study so as to make references in LotR consistent with given dates. He used the phases for 1941-42 for TA 3018-19 (shifted by a few days)Dr. Kristine Larsen, Professor of Physics and Astronomy has posted this and several other items. Link below for those of an astronomical bent. The Astronomy of Middle (-earth)In the case of the elves, I think a component of their interest must certainly be their own history. When they first emerged in Middle-earth it was lit only by the stars. It was another ca. 500 years before the Sun and Moon were created. The stars may also have been of agricultural significance to them as well. The Numenoreans almost certainly used the stars for navigation. Celestial navigation in literature goes back at least as far as the Odyssey. Mathematics is not really addressed by Tolkien but it's hard to imagine the Numenorean architectural achievements could have been accomplished without some basic trig. Many cultures in the real world made detailed studies of astronomy in antiquity. Tolkien may have had a lot of Luddite sympathies, but you don't get civilizations like Numenor without some basic science and technology.I'm not sure how much time Saruman actually spent looking at the stars, the only reference I know is from FotR, The Council of Elrond.‘They took me and they set me alone on the pinnacle ofOrthanc, in the place where Saruman was accustomed towatch the stars. (Gandalf speaking)It may be that he was experimenting with "sorcery" or astrology. It's also possible he liked to go up there and relax with some pipeweed after a busy day of evil. ;) Orthanc was a Numenorean construction, so the observatory itself is not of Saruman's design and may have had little to do with his occupation of Isengard. As far as actionable knowledge goes I believe it was probably more often of a practical nature rather than a prophetic one.
Are the Pleiades an evil star system?
Job 38: 31 Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? 32 Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? 33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth? Description of the Pleiades in "The Witness of The Stars" by E. W. Bullinger http://levendwater.org/books/witness/cha...
If Christians contend that the zodiac is fully evil then why did God put it in creation in Gen 1:14 and say that it was "good?" Or why did the wise men use it to find Christ?
Genesis 1:14 - “Then God said: “Let there be luminaries in the expanse of the heavens to make a division between the day and the night, and they will serve as signs for seasons and for days and years.”The heavenly bodies, primarily the sun and moon were useful to man for calculating time- days and nights, weeks, months, years, etc. They were not designed for foretelling the future or any sort of divination, things which the Bible strongly condemns. The “wise men” were astrologers who did the very things the Bible forbids. The fact that they came to find Christ did not mitigate the fact that they practiced divination by astrology.
Is the dog star system in the same direction as Pleiades star system?
Sirius is also known colloquially as the "Dog Star", reflecting its prominence in its constellation, Canis Major (Greater Dog) .Right ascension 06h 45m 08.9173s Declination −16° 42′ 58.017″ In astronomy, the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters (Messier object 45 or M45), is an open star cluster containing middle-aged hot B-type stars located in the constellation of Taurus. Right ascension 3h 47m 24s Declination +24° 7′ From this I would say No.
What is a seven pointed star?
I was always raised in a christian family, now my son is worried about something in his video game about a seven pointed star. I don't really know why, but anyway i told him it was cool. Now he has been pestering me to ask about it so i am. What is heptagram, is it satanic? I always was told it had something to do with the universe, or the symbol of perfection or God, as well as symbol of the seven days of the earths creation. I don't really know anyway, but thanks a lot for your answers.
