Ex Roommate Who Is Not On Lease Refuse To Pay Utilitiy Bill

My EX roommate won't pay the utilities bill!!!! Help!?

So my roommate's lease was up the last day of June, so the last payment is to be made on the utility bill which is only $120. She is not returning my texts, my calls and I dont have her on facebook. It's really annoying me! It's only 120 bucks which makes me mad. She moved out but still owes for the very last month

Is it worth getting the law invovled via lawyer or small claims court in Canada here? what can I do???

Please help! Electricity bill/internet is due soooonnn which is under my name.

Ex-roommates ignored text about last utilities bill, what should I do?

Myself and another were on the lease, the 3rd roommate sublet the 3rd bedroom from us. There is a written agreement that bills (electricity/cable and internet) are split each way. This worked fine all year. Lease was up, we all moved out, and I (as my name is on all bills) got the final bill. I texted both of them on Friday, no response (I even saw one on Saturday). I am worried that they are trying not to pay. When should I text them a reminder ("hey, need your portion of utilities ASAP")? My roommate on the lease also gave our subletter her security deposit before we got ours back from management (stupid), so even though she was trustworthy, I worry she will try to skip out.

Can I sue my roommate for not paying his bills?

I know I would . he lived thee n did not pay any bills u can sue him for his part of his rent . oh did he get any mail to the house If so keep a piece of the maill only junk mail with his name on it . this will showed he legally lived their .

How do you get your roommates to pay their share of the bills?

How I counter this is by making sure one utility (usually internet) is in my name. Each roommate, if possible, has one utility obligation in their name. Then everyone shares the expenses. If someone doesn't want to pay for their share of the internet, then I change the wifi password. This has only happened once and once I did that, the issue resolved itself.I shutoff someones internet when they wouldn't pay electric, which helped. Another time the roommate that controlled the electric threatened to have it shut off if one roommate didn't pay up.In every instance the roommates that disrespected everyone else by not paying usually got forced out at the end of our lease. Yea every now and then one might have gotten a temporary free right on some utility, but leaving sucked. We had a great place and had a great roommat setup. But alas, some people like to abuse a good thing. How do you get your roommates to pay their share of the bills?

Where should I start if my roommate refuses to pay their part of the utility bills?

It depends on your lease and any written agreements with your roommate. It can also depend greatly on the local landlord tenant laws in your area.If you mean that you and your roommate are both tenants and both have signed the lease with your landlord, but you have no other agreement, there’s not much you can do. Sure, you can take him to court. You’ll say, “We agreed to split the utility bills and rent.” She or he can say, “We did? Really? You said you’d help me out while I’m between jobs…” Who does the judge believe? Without a written agreement, there’s no evidence to support either you or your roommate. If you mean that you own the place where you’re living and you are renting to your roommate, do you have a signed lease? If so, then you can take legal action against him or her if the lease specifies how much your roommate is supposed to pay. If it doesn’t, or you have a verbal agreement, then, once again, you have nothing to go on and nothing to back you up (unless you have witnesses to the verbal agreement). All the roommate has to do is disagree with you and, without any written agreement, the judge has no firm evidence to back up either point of view.If you mean any other living situation, but there is nothing written about how you and your roommate are to split rent and utility bills, then, once again, you’re out of luck.In short: If you have a written agreement, and they’re ignoring it, then you’ll have to start with legal action. If you do not have anything in writing stating how rent and utility bills are to be split, then there’s nothing you can do. As Samuel Goldwyn said, “A verbal agreement is not worth the paper it’s written on.”

If the utilities bill is in my roommates name, can she legally force me to pay it?

Now before you start yelling at me for being a jerk who just wants to stick my roommates with the bill, listen to why I am asking this:

My roommates and I got in a fight, and we would not consider each other friends any more. Since the fight, I have been asking to see the utilities bill each month before I pay it, whereas before the fight I just trusted them to tell me the truth. They have been very offended that I would ask this and very resistant to show me the bills (current or old). When I said I wouldn't pay without seeing the bill, one of them threatened to call her lawyer (and she does have one). I don't have a lawyer, and don't have any desire to get one involved. I'm trying to figure out if she is bluffing to scare me into paying, of if there is a way that she can legally force me to pay the bill, because I would really like to avoid any huge issues and might just back down if I can't win that fight.

I live in Colorado if that makes any difference.

Thoughts?

Am I responsible for my dead roommates utility bills even though I'm not on lease nor bills?

My rmmate (A) got in a bike accident and incurred massive head trauma because she wasn't wearing a helmet. She in a coma in the hospital for 3 wks before she died. She was 21yrs old living with Multiple Sclerosis(diagnosed at 16). A's family is fully aware of her accident and death and have started to receive the hospital bills...1st one: $135,000. This bill in addition to her numerous MS doctor and neurology bills are well beyond anything that most normal humans would be able to pay, even in a lifetime.

I am not trying to screw the gas co. nor am I avoiding paying what I owe nor do I want pity from the global energy grid--they could care less, they want their $$$. If I was able to deal with this right after the accident, I would have. One never expects death to happen so suddenly and violently. I didn't think I would be so disrupted.

i especially do not appreciate dead people jokes. Trauma and crisis are not a joking matter, esp when you are in the thick of it.

thx 4 the advice

What is the legal process when a roommate refuses to pay their portion of the bills? Can I sue?

Sure. Anyone can sue anyone for anything. You'll need a copy of your signed agreement with your roommate, spelling out who pays what, how much, when, etc . The agreement should already spell out what happens to a deadbeat roommate, but if you forgot to add that clause, just take the Agreement and go to small claims court.Your roommate will have tp provide documentation of payments he's made, and the judge will award you the remainder due. Then you just have to collect. With a judgement, you can have his wages garnished. That'll be fun.

Our roommate has unexpectedly left without paying the rent.  What should we do?

Unfortunately, you should equally share the bill and pay it. The leasing office won't clear your names until you do so. The moral issue the problem involves is not their concern. After paying that and getting all documentation possible, you could look for the guy who didn't pay his share and tell him you had to find a way to cover his debt and now you expect to get into some sort of agreement on how he would pay you back, informing him the next step would be to formally sue him. And if nothing of it works and you do not have your money back, you will at least pay for having your names cleared and deliver the guilt to whom it belongs, just by telling the guy who disappeared that he caused others some harm (but he knows it already, in case you don't find him). Knowing it will work as one more heavy thing on his consciousness. Paying (money or not) for other people's wrongs is one of those unfair things in life. That's why it is so important to know who we gather with.
