Exchange Student Program

Has anyone had a good experience with ASSE (a student exchange program)?

ASSE is not one of the worst, nor one of the best. You might check on the website for the Committee for the Safety of Foreign Exchange Students to see what kind of reports there are on it. The site lists news reports from around the country.
http://csfes.org/
There are several I've never seen up there: Aspect, AFS, Rotary, 4-H, YFU -- all of which have a great reputation.
I'd also check with your school counselor and ask who they recommend. The organization is only as good as the local people.

As to the experience itself, I recommend a year stay. That way you'll get the full benefit of language immersion. While it's hard at first to understand the language, the benefits are enormous!

Foreign exchange student programs?

It's wonderful that you are thinking about studying abroad! I was an exchange student in high school and it was an amazing experience. There are tons of positives to going in high school. First of all, you will live with a host family. There are some college programs where you might live with a host family, but in most you will live in a dorm. Living with a host family will help you learn more about the culture, become fluent in the language, and make lifelong connections. I am still in touch with my host family many years after my exchange.

If you become an exchange student in high school, you will be placed in a Japanese high school. This is an amazing experience that you won't get in college. In most college programs, you will take classes in English with other American students. If you go in high school, all of your classmates will be Japanese and your classes will be taught in Japanese. This will enable you to learn the language much more quickly. It will also help you make local friends!

It is also much easier to learn a language in high school. The few years between your Junior year of high school and your Junior year of college will make a big difference in your language learning ability! It is still possible to learn a language in college, but it will be more difficult.

Finally, if you go abroad in high school you will be able to put it on your college application. Colleges love to see students who are independent and mature enough to handle an international exchange. There are even some scholarships available for former exchange students! Knowing a foreign language will also be an asset when applying for college-- it will make you a much stronger applicant and you'll be able to test out of a lot of classes once you start college.

Good luck convincing your mom!

Foreign Exchange student programs in the 1950's?

Im writing a skit for my history class on the 1950's. I was going to include an element of an exchange student from spain, however im not sure if there were exchange students in the 50's. I would like the skit to be as historically acurate as possible. Anybody know?

Exchange student programs in Canada...?

Youth for Understanding has a Canadian office.
You can go with them. You should have fairly good grades and everything, and you have to be between 16-18 I think.

Go to the website for details.

If you need any more help, email me.

I think I will be kicked out of my exchange student program and will fly back home sooner than I planed. How will this influence my future? Will the universities I am going to apply to find out?

I assume you're being kicked out for misconduct of some sort. The answer is yes, this will follow you throughout your academic career. Since you talk about applying to universities, I assume that you're in high school. I imagine you could try to get your parents to bribe the high school into hiding it, but then they still have to account for academic credits for that semester. There's a good chance that you won’t graduate on time, and there's a good chance some of the colleges to which you apply will ask you to explain that. If the explanation doesn't look quite honest, the colleges can always contact the exchange program. Will this haunt you forever? Yes; but like most high crimes and misdemeanors, its effect is reduced when offset by years of good conduct. It will almost certainly affect the first school that you apply to for college, but if you show two years of impeccable conduct, you might be able to transfer to a better school. Then, when you're going off for a job or a graduate program, it will be five or six years behind you, and you will have shown that you learned from your mistakes (I hope).

Would you volunteer for an exchange student program with an extraterrestrial race?

Yes.I always wanted to say: “It is a Good Day to Die”, before playing soccer:Now that is my image of a great soccer defender……

Are there any exchange programs for students from Poland?

Good idea :)In Europe you can go for ERASMUS programme. For rest of the world I think every university got their own programmes for this. For USA - it is not exactly exchange programme, but I have many friends that loved Work & Travel - you go to USA to work (mostly simple jobs) and live there for about 1–2 months. You get accomodation and salary. Many students use money they earn to make a trip around USA later :)

What are some good foreign exchange student programs for middle schoolers?

I (honestly) only know of two: Adolesco, and En Famille International. Both work with kids as young as nine. The two programs are very similar, the primary difference being that En Famille kids are overseas for 6 months, with Adolesco it’s shorter — up to three months. Both are family-centered, language-immersion programs where children are carefully matched with exchange partners and both take a turn to travel and host, together. My two children have done four exchanges total, two with each program - I can’t say enough good things about the experience and how it changed their lives for the better.

Which is the best country to choose for an exchange student program? Netherlands, Germany, France or Czech Republic?

Best part about Europe is the awesome connection and free movement between the countries, so you can virtually live in any of these countries and easily experience other countries during your stay there. For adventure, probably France will be a better alternative for its proximity to Spain, popular for adventure and unique activities like bull fighting and Tomatina Festival. Also, Paris is by far bigger than any other city in the countries you mentioned, and definitely provides better business exposure. Proximity to London also helps.Every country will provide a different experience and I would suggest travel to these while you are there, it is extremely easy and a wonderful part of Europe stay.
