Exhaust Vents Not Working.

Hvac question!! Return air vent not working?

We had someone clean our furnace, and they also made sure all the vents were open... We showed the tech that the master bedroom (only room on 3rd floor of a tri level home) there's 2 vents, one is blowing out warm air, the either one isn't doing anything
... He said that he's pretty positive it's a return vent, and he went in the basement to make sure the vents were open there too, and they are... He said that someone may have shut off this return vent somewhere in the wall, and the only way to find out is to drill and get behind the wall :-(
I care because I want central air installed in spring, and I hear all the time that: if there's no return air vent in a room=no cooling, especially if its on the top floor

Should I get another opinion? The guy didn't seem concerned saying that there's return vents on the floor below (2 other bedrooms and a bathroom below) so it should be fine. If so, great! But if anyone thinks otherwise or has any info as to why a return vent would be closed off/not working, I'd love to hear! Thanks in advance

What would happen if my laptop fan stop working?

This is your processor. Which is heart of your laptop/PC. It generated enormous amount of heat when it processes information in 1's and 0's. Motherboards /logic boards are specifically designed to vent the hot air and keep the dice or chip cool. If the fan in your computer stops even for couple of minutes you'll smoke coming out of your laptop and screen goes blank in no time. On your desktop the view will be something like this:This happens because your processor processes billions of cycles in a second, which results in generating considerable amount of heat. I would not suggest you to try experimenting it with your personal laptop/ desktop at home or anywhere. It can be dangerous.Hope it answers your question.

Bathroom Exhaust Fan Blowing and Sucking?

So I posted a question on this but I have better information.

I have two identical bathroom exhaust fans in my house. One of them is not working properly. Half of the grids sucks air, the other half blows air. Its pretty odd. I looked in the attic and I can't find out where it start or terminates...it more than likely under the insullation.

Its a vaulted ceiling so I'd have to crawl in the attic to investigage...that doesn't boed well for a 6'2, 240 lb guy. Is there a trick to maybe take the fan out and check for problems that way?

I see two potential vents on the roof that could be the fan, but that pitch is pretty steep up there.

My exhaust vent hood above the stove is leaking water onto my stove in heavy rain. What can I do to stop this?

Sounds like the flashing around the vent on the roof could be leaking or the top cap on the vent pipe has come off.

Why would the fan and light in my kitchen exhaust hood both stop working?

I would immediately suspect a breaker switch, so check that. Otherwise the power line may have come loose from rattling behind the power cover. Be sure you do shut the breaker off before you check that.If you are uncomfortable troubleshooting this further, please call an electrician.

Will a bathroom exhaust fan make the AC work harder?

The master bedroom in my house have an air conditioner and a bathroom with an exhaust fan.

My question is, does turning on both the AC and the fan for long period makes the AC works harder than when the fan isn't on?

I don't really know much about how the exhaust fan work but from my understanding it sucks air out so the cold air that's being provided by the AC is sucked out too. Thus, the AC has to work constantly to provide cold air. Is that right?

Smallest diameter vent for a bathroom exhaust fan?

Determine the right size of fan for your bathroom by calculating the CFM (cubic feet per minute) of the bathroom, which means minimum airflow needed to achieve 8 air exchanges per hour. The formula to calculate CFM is:

CFM = Volume/7.5, where Volume = Length x Width x Height (of the bathroom)

Thus a bathroom that is 10 feet long, 10 feet wide and 10 feet high has:
Volume = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000
And, CFM = 1000/7.5 = 133.33.
Thus, any fan with CFM listed as 134 or higher is good enough for this bathroom.
After this, if you don't have space for the suggested vent pipe size you'll either end up doing wrong or having to find an alternate choice.

Do you need to exhaust a portable air conditioner on heating mode to a window or door to vent?

Maybe…If the airconditioner is a heatpump, then it will require venting, cold air will come out of the back of it (basically ac in reverse). But if it’s a cheaper one, it might not be a heatpump, it might just have a strip heater, making it like a space heater, these do not use compressors (in heat mode) and so don’t require venting. It’s also worth noting that if it’s the latter type you will only get 100% efficiency, whereas a heatpump will probably get around 300%.

Why do I smell exhaust when my hot water tank has been idle for a day or two?

Fumes from the pilot light burning.

When the unit is heating water, the heat from the burner is sufficient to propel exhausts up the flue, but when it sits idle, the heat from the pilot does not. Also, ambient winds can blow drafts though the flue.

You may also have a problem with an obstruction in your flue, or a poorly set-up flue system.
