Exit bag/suicide bag. Nitrogen gas vs helium gas?
I knew someone who committed suicide last year who used an exit bag. I was a little unfamiliar with this method before it happened. He had ordered a tank of nitrogen has and I read that nitrogen is already present in a lot of the air we breathe so its easier to become accustomed to it if you want to cut off your oxygen supply without a feeling of suffocation coming over you. But most things about the exit bag online suggest using helium. Why helium? Is it a better option than nitrogen or is it just easier to obtain? Also, please don't be concerned. I'm asking this question out of curiosity, not because I plan on offing myself.

Well two things were going on- 1: she was inhaling a gas normally used to induce a euphoric or surreal feeling, and 2: she was depriving herself oxygen. In all likelihood, the helium probably prevented her from feeling like she was suffocating. If you're concerned for her being in pain while committing suicide- typically the emotional pain outweighs the mind's capacity at that point to register physical consequence. I'm curious as to whether or not you've discussed this with your counselor- if not, you may want to inquire about the details from them- they may be able to provide a greater depth of insight into the matter, as well as explore why you want to know about the physical characteristics of what happened. I'm very, very sorry for your loss, but don't be afraid to ask your therapist any and all questions you need to. They're there to help, and it takes time to fully understand your own emotions in such a complicated situation. Take care.

I am confused about helium and suicide?
It would be the same type of helium. But to kill yourself with it, you'd have to inhale a lot more, in a much more concentrated form, in a different way, than you do to make your voice change. When people inhale helium to make their voices change, they usually only take 1-2 deep breaths. If they are doing it properly, in a well-ventilated area, this will not kill them. However, if too much helium is inhaled, or it isn't inhaled properly, it can fill up the lungs and make oxygen intake impossible, causing the user to asphyxiate. Because it's very difficult to tell how much helium is safe and how much isn't, I would recommend that you don't ever inhale it for any reason.
