Why do people think the musical Phantom of the Opera is overrated?
Because its been on Broadway for 26 some odd years. It is, in fact, pretty overrated--or at least for very theatre-oriented people. Don't get me wrong, I love the show and I have an enormous original cast poster hanging in basement. It is a great show, but it gets a lot of hype because people who don't know a lot about theatre have seen it. The same has happened with Wicked, Grease, Rent, Les Miserables... they are all great shows (welllll, I'd probably fight you on Grease being any good) but they are over-hyped because they are in the media. People who say "its overrated" probably love some lesser known musicals and feel like it should be well known. Not to mention the Phantom movie was not so great, so if you are basing your opinion of the musical on that, you're bound to think its overrated.
