Fashion Help Denim Cut Off Jacket

How bad of a fashion decision will it be to wear a suit jacket with jeans?

First of all, suit jackets are not longer than blazers. The same anatomic proportions apply to bot suit jackets and "odd" jackets. The current trend of cutting jackets way too short may have less traction in suits, so it may appear that current off the rack blazers tend to be shorter. From a style - instead of a fashion - POV the same criteria for length apply for both. Second: I assume you are not asking this because someone critizised an outfit you thought looked good, but you're genuinely insecure about the matter. If you want to pull off some hip fashion statement, it's all up to you to make that happen. The following advice only applies if you are just insecure and you want to dress nicely based on the common consensus of good style. There are two parts to the question: 1. Can I use orphaned suit jackets as "odd" jackets? Eva pointed to a good thread on that matter. My personal view is that this is mainly something based on color. Virtually any blue jacket can be worn on its own, while for any grey jacket it is very problematic. Most checked patterns can be worn as jacket only, most striped patterns can't. If you have a jacket that is "borderline" you can make it more casual by changing some details, e.g. replace the buttons with brass or horn ones, having an alterations tailor replace the lining with something flashy and flamboyant and it will look less "suity". 2. Should I wear jeans with jackets? In my eyes you shouldn't really. Yes, a navy blazer with jeans is an okay look, but not a great one and this is mainly due to the fact that navy blazers are about the only piece of clothing that can be worn with virtually anything. Jeans have a very coarse weave and not a good drape, if you want a matching jacket, it should not have a too fine weave and not darpe very good either. Also if not wearing a suit it usually looks much better, when there is a color contrast between pants and jacket, with the jacket having the darker color as a safe choice. If you absolutely want to wear jeans with a jacket, thick heavy tweeds will do best.  That being said, chances are your particular suit jacket will not be a good match for jeans. Still it would be a shame if you couln't use your bespoke jacket any more. Thus my advice would be to get a pair of pants that matches the weave of the jacket and complements the jacket color well. That could range from chinos/khakis to flannel or worsted wool trousers.

How do you resize a denim jacket/vest?

Okay, so recently I bought I denim jacket from a thrift store in the hopes of making it into a vest. I cut off the sleeves and it was all going very well, but the vest doesn't quite fit my body and needs to be pulled in at the sides. I heard somewhere that if you take a triangle of material from under the arm hole and re stitch it that it pulls it in and makes it tighter, but I'm too scared to try :S haha
Anyway, so if anyone knows how to resize a denim vest so that it is tighter around the body, or if you could link me to a tutorial about it, it would be greatly appreciated.
I will give points and whatever. :)

you don't want to look like your wearing a denim suit, so if the pieces are to matchy-matchy, I'd say forget about it, but if they contrast well together, go for it.
