The United States National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is an independent agency of the United States federal government charged with preserving and documenting government and historical records. It is also charged with increasing public access to those documents. NARA is officially responsible for publishing acts of Congress, presidential proclamations and executive orders, and federal regulations. 1.Was the New Deal an abuse of presidential power? 2.Was FDR seeking a dictatorship? 3.Was the New Deal a workingman’s antidote for a dreadful national and international depression? 4.Why are there such diverse historical interpretations on the depression and New Deal? 5.Why are some authors and groups so anti-FDR and anti-New Deal? 6.How does one’s contemporary society “color” one’s interpretation of the past? 7.One can define a system of “checks and balances” in American society as one institution providing safeguards against abuses of power by another institution. Use examples from the text or the websites to demonstrate how this system worked during the depression and the New Deal era. Is it possible that as the system operates, the self-proclaimed guardians may in fact have ulterior motives? 8.What were the combined effects of the depression and the New Deal on American values concerning presidential power, freedom of the press and freedom of expression?
