Feedback/tips On My Singing

How do I progress my singing! I never had lessons and need some tips.?

THE ONLY SAFE way to learn the correct singing techniques & to improve properly IS to take OFFLINE face-to-face singing lessons with a fully trained vocal teacher (in case you do not have a teacher yet)! The teacher HAS TO BE in the same room with you, so that he/she could give you proper feedback.

Please do NOT rely on any dodgy web tutorials because that way you can misunderstand things VERY EASILY and develop bad habits, hoarseness, vocal nodules and other nasties IN NO TIME, and even though you would sound good! It is always much wiser to invest a little bit of your money/time to face-to-face lessons rather than wasting the same amount of money (or even more!) to frequent ear-nose-throat specialist visits due to aforementioned problems, so please reconsider this. If you can't afford vocal lessons, then joining a choir is the only SAFE alternative option. And believe me, but even MANY of those who have music as their hobby DO take lessons as well!

Always remember to warm up your voice properly, but please know your limits and don't overdo your voice! Remember the diaphragmatic support, do not strain your throat too much! Also, remember good body posture!

Avoid fizzy drinks (burp danger), dairy products (mucus risk), caffeinated products (coffee & tea included, they dry up your throat) and spicy food (irritation risk)! You can consume these things, but NEVER before singing!

Do NOT shout, yell, scream nor otherwise abuse your voice AT ANY TIME! Also, please respect your vocal range; if your teacher says you are, say, more of an alto (baritone if you are male), then you ARE more of an alto (baritone).

DO NOT try to imitate anyone famous, that will usually give you just bad habits and even damage your throat. You are YOU and your voice is unique, so please learn to cherish that. The world does NOT need copycats.

Do NOT sing, whisper, shout, yell nor scream if having a sore throat/cold/flu, Also, do speak as little as you can if you have flu/cold/sore throat!

Remember to drink at least 2 litres of room-temperature still water every day, not just during singing days!

Smoking is a big no-no, as is inhaling secondhand smoke. Also, avoid staying in dusty and/or moldy environment.

Tips for singing Baritone?

Hi there! I'm a Tenor in my high school choir/performing arts, etc etc, and I used to be baritone (until Pirates of Penzance my freshman year, talk about a vocal range extension!!!). Here's my advice in a nutshell:
1) CONFIDENCE. Singing is a beautiful way of expressing yourself musically and creatively, and you have EVERY right to enjoy yourself...never EVER let anyone bring you down, I've been insecure before, but just like everyone else, you have the right to express yourself vocally.

WITH THAT...some confidence building tips:
1) If you have extensive musical background, you probably know about intonation/pitch, rhythm, sight-reading, basic vocal development, etc. etc...BUTTT if not that's totally fine! Ask a music teacher/musician that you trust/know to hear you sing, and get feedback from them (tell them to be honest, but they shouldn't be brutal). Most likely they'll give you some great advice on developing vocally.
2) The "vocal range" for a baritone is a low A on the bass-staff to a high F above the bass-staff. Because you're a guy, guys usually have more vocal development than girls...you might have more lower notes than higher notes, and vice versa. That is PERFECTLY normal, and your voice is just adjusting itself to where it needs to be. I'm assuming your anywhere from 15-18, so after a few years your voice will really be in a great place. Unlike sports, your voice gets BETTER as you grow older (just listen to Sting, broadway singers, "Glee" stars etc. etc.) and you'll be able to do a lot more fun stuff!
3) Coming off of that, I know that "nah-ah-ah-ah-ah" exercises are great (sol-fa-mi-re-do musically). "Eee to Ahh" are great too (Do to Do, an octave exercise...make sure you make the vowels tall!). And my favorite, "Yah yah yah yah's" (Do-sol-mi-do arpeggio, and you could suspend on "Sol" to build your baritone range).
4) When the audition comes and you've worked your best, just give it your all!!! Have fun with it!! I still enjoy auditions that I do, because you have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Even if you didn't get the part of "Fagin" (but I hope you do!) I'm sure you would still be cast in a role somehow.

In any case, break a leg and great luck to you!!!!! I really hope this helps :)

I love singing but I am very bad at it. Will my singing improve with time or is it that only some people are blessed with this talent?

Nobody in this world is blessed with the talent of singing nor they are born with it.If someone sings well without any practise or classes that dosent mean they are blessed with the talent. They listen to those songs carefully with full concentration, the tune gets registered in their mind and that is why they could do it better. You told you love singing. Never mind your singing is good or bad. Start practising. Do what you love. Sing all the time. Doing what you love makes you happy. Be happy all the time.Once you enjoy yourself in singing you will automatically sing a lot and eventually your singing will improve by time. Have confidence in yourself. This will be the first step to improve yourself.I will also suggest you some tips to improve your singingTry to find your vocal range. There are numerous YouTube videos to test your vocal range. All of them are almost similar. All you have to do is listen to them, sing in your comfortable zone and find your vocal range. Then in that vocal range search a song you like and listen to it carefully for 10 or 15 times. Put all your concentration to listen. Before directly singing the song first humm the song everytime and all the time and then start singing slowly.Record while you sing and listen to it. It will not be perfect for the first time itself. We are not Arjith singhs and shreya goshals. Even they make mistakes and correct them. Find out where and in which part you lag. Listen to the original song and then try to correct that part. This is not only for the song in your vocal range. It is also applicable for any song that you like. Sing in your Natural voice rather than singing in a false voice. Practise will brings you perfection…

Why does my blocked nose affect my singing so much?

A little anatomy lesson here:The nose and mouth are both connected. At the back of you mouth, starting into your throat, the nasal (nose) cavities join to the oral (mouth) cavity. From there, air passes through the trachea, and into the lungs. When you breathe, air passes through both passageways, but more air is released depending on whether you breathe through your nose or mouth. When your nose is stuffy, air passage is blocked or limited through your nose, so it become harder or impossible to inhale or exhale through the nose. Now, singing lesson:Because both the nose and mouth are connected, it is very easy to release too much air through your nose instead of your mouth when singing. This is fairly easy to overcome, and will allow for better singing if you learn to sing only through your mouth. When your nose is stuffy, try to exhale only via the mouth. Then try singing the same way. If you can’t, that’s because you’re still trying to release air through the nose. Keep practicing and you’ll be able to sing no matter how blocked your nasal passageways are.
