Feeling Weak Gave Blood Yesterday

I gave blood yesterday and they told me my iron level was 13.1?

The iron level they gave you is called the hemoglobin (Hgb). Hemoglogin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body, and then it carries carbon dioxide from the body to the lungs.

Normal Hgb for your age is 12-16. Women tend to have slightly lower Hgb because they menstruate, and this can cause some red cell loss. You don't need to take iron supplements, because your Hgb is within normal ranges.

Sometimes people feel weak a day or so after giving blood. You lost a pint of liquid from your body, and your body doesn't know the difference between donating this blood and getting injured and bleeding it out. Your body's telling you to rest because you bled a lot yesterday.

It takes about 24 hours for your body to replace plasma, the main liquid portion of your blood. It takes a little longer to replace white cells and platelets (about a week), and it takes about 50 days to replace the red cells you lost.

It's important to stay well-hydrated and eat well for a couple of days after giving blood. Most blood banks offer soda and sweets (like cookies) for blood donors, and that's OK because it can keep yo from getting "shocky" with low blood pressure. But be sure to eat protein and carbohydrates, and drink water, the next few days.

Thank you for donating blood! You've saved someone's life.

I have been donating blood for 20+ years.

Gave blood yesterday and fealing sick?

i gave blood in my schools blood drive. I've done this a few times but today i just feel like crap. i feel sleepy and weak. yesterday i drank a lot of water and had a lot to eat (they have a lot of stuff set out). i felt fine most of the day yesterday but know i feel sick. is this normal and what should i do?

Why do we feel weak after donating blood?

Its more of a feeling of "lightness" than weakness. It is caused by the lowered blood sugar to the brain. Your blood sugar has lowered because the amount of blood taken also had a certain amount of blood sugar. Since it is suddenly missing, the body reacts poorly to this loss of sugar.  The symptoms include onset of nausea, headaches, shakiness, paresthesia, hunger, fatigue...and so on. However, to quickly deal with hypoglycemia directly after a substantial loss of blood, sit with your head to your knees (parallel to the floor), as this lowers your brain and facilitates the blood-flow to the brain, allowing more blood sugars to reach it quickly. However, having carbohydrate-rich foods cure this.  It will help normalize the sudden change in blood sugar and will help you feel more normal sooner. The "Weakness" you feel is due to the sudden loss of blood pressure due to the blood loss but the body compensates this loss by retaining fluid in the kidneys by concentrating the urine.

I donated 300 ml blood yesterday Second time. I feel weak today. How many days my body would take to recover? What should I eat?

Firstly, congratulations. You just saved a life by donating blood. Your body needs enough proteins, water, iron, vitamins, and minerals for repleneshing the lost blood. For proteins, eggs are the best source of proteins and amino acids. For minerals, vitamins, consume green leafy vegetables and fruits. For iron, consume iron rich foods like spinach. if you live in India, jagree is the best iron rich food. If you feel weakness, theres no need to worry. It is normal to feel weak after donation. When you feel weak, have a glass of water plus glucose powder and lie down for some time. And remember. You should donate blood only once in 3 months. Not more frequently.

Is it normal to feel weak and tired after donating blood?

Yes, it is normal. You should drink lots of liquids and and eat properly. The first time i donated blood, I felt really paranoid that something might go wrong. Avoid those thoughts and congratulate yourself for your awesome act of humanity!

Is it normal to feel weak and sleepy after giving blood?

Yes!! Of course it is! They tell you that before you donate. I was absolutely fine right after I gave blood, I walked home from school and everything. But then we drove to a nearby town and I could barely keep my eyes open on the way there. I think I slept for thirteen or fourteen hours when I got home. Furthermore, I couldn't eat anything for about three days. I didn't feel sick, I just was not hungry at all.

Also, be very careful not to eat anything high in sugar or sodium. There isn't enough blood in your body to dilute the sugar/salt. I made the mistake of drinking a small peanut butter milkshake and I honestly felt like dying.

Drink LOTS of water and get plenty of rest.

Still feeling faint day after giving blood?

It's kinda my own fault. When they gave me the iron test in my left hand, my iron level was slightly below the minimum number required to give. But they retested me in my right hand, and it was well above the minimum level.

In my haste and excitement to give blood, I had them take from my left arm without mentioning the failure in that arm. I bruised shortly after it was over, and felt slightly sick, but not bad enough to it seriously affect me.

This morning, I woke up and have almost passed out every time I try to stand. Will it pass, or should I see medical attention to get my iron level up?

By the way, I've given blood once before this, but did not have any side effects whatsoever.

Is it normal to feel weak and nauseated several days after donating blood? I donated blood on Saturday, 9/23, and I felt weak and nauseous. I started vomiting and not being able to keep down solid food since Tuesday, 9/27. Is this normal?

No. Some people feel dizzy and a little weak immediately after donating. That’s why they have you eat donuts, drink a little juice and also sit down and wait a bit. You should feel completely fine within an hour. You probably have something else going on and it is just a coincidence that you gave blood. See a doctor and mention that you gave blood and the timeline. If you have been vomiting since Tuesday, see a doctor. If it is a virus, they won’t be able to “cure” you, but you should be checked to make sure you aren’t dehydrated or losing electrolytes, which can be dangerous. There is also the possibility of food-borne bacteria. Best to go and have someone look at you.

Is it normal to feel dizzy the day after donating blood?

The answer is yes. Although it's not rampant, a lot of people experience dizziness and/or nausea after a blood donation. Especially if it's your first time. Your body is suddenly missing about a pint of blood plasma and blood cells,(assuming you donated whole blood.) This is why they have you sit down eat something and drink some juice of some kind for about 15 minutes, after you donate.
Your body needs to compensate for the loss, but not to worry...it doesn't take very long.
For the next day or so, take body movements slowly. When you get up from a laying position, sit on the edge of the bed for a moment to allow your blood pressure to adjust. Same thing when you go from sitting to standing. Wait a second before you take that first step.
Eat plenty and drink lots of fluid and this annoyance should be gone by the end of today, and remember.... You are a Hero!!
