Fell Asleep On Arm Wont Move

I fell asleep on my arm, woke up, and then it was hard to move... is this normal?

Last night I woke up, after having slept on top of my right arm for probably quite a while. I went to move it, and it was as if I was in a dream; you can almost feel yourself tensing and relaxing the muscle, but it just won't move. Granted, I was still half asleep, but I could not move my arm for the life of me. It took a while, but after tensing and relaxing the muscle in my arm, moving it in weight-lifting like motions with the help of my other arm, and such notions, I regained the ability to move my right arm again. I was wondering, though; is this normal? Or should I be worried about this? It sure did freak me out, so an answer would help me sleep peacefully once more... without fear of waking up with a practically paralyzed arm. Huhhuh.

My arm fell asleep and won't wake up?

It's going on 3 weeks now and my arm feels like it's asleep. It's hard to grab anything, just feels almost numb. I'm a healthy 33 year old male. What could this be?

Arm and hand fell asleep and now my fingers and wrist don't work.?

Thanks for the great answers. Here is an updated description of my main issue:

When I lay my forearm on my thigh with my elbow at my hip and my wrist at my knee, palm UP, I can bend my wrist up and I can curl my fingers in, though not tightly. If I flip my arm palm DOWN, I cannot bend my wrist up at all. There is no wrist movement at all.

Douglas B - I don't have pain when I press the areas you indicated. I really don't have pain anyplace - I just don't work. About 2 hours ago I tried the advice you gave anyway but have had no success yet.

Doc KD - I took the shower you suggested, and have been stretching as best I can. My numbness is a little tingly, like what you feel right when your arm is waking up, just before pins & needles.

Elliot M - Your pinched nerve healed? How long did it take? I don't have baby aspirin, just regular strength 325mg. Can I take this even though I took 1 Advil ?

Anything further from any of you is welcome, thanks for all your advice so far!

My hand is asleep and won't wake up?

I fell asleep on my hand and my fingers and hand feel numb. It's been three hours and it won't go away! It's killing me. And I can still move my fingers, but they are very numb. PLEASE HELP

Foot fell asleep and won't wake up! PLEASE HELP?

Run your fingers and fingernails gently over the affected area. Start with the bottom half of your leg. Doing this is encouraging the blood flow to your foot. You desperately need this.

Move your foot very slowly. You don't want to even move it an inch. Simply start rocking the foot back and forth.

Roll your fingertips along the bottom of your foot, keeping in time with the vibrations of your foot. Waking up a sleeping foot can sometimes feel like being pricked by needles, and you want to avoid that at all costs. Proceed with gentleness.

Start to move your foot for a longer length. Instead of vibrating, try to put pressure on your foot. Test the entire foot for sensitivity. You should be able to feel all sensations that touch your foot at this time.

Push your foot down on the ground as though you are about to stand. If you feel the ground fully and no more tingling sensations, then you are ready to go. Repeat steps 4 and 5 as many times as needed until you are literally on your feet!

You should go to the doctors if your numbness lasts more than a half hour, it would mean something is wrong with your circulation or nerves.

14 month old won't lay down to sleep?

Have you tried lying down on the floor where she can see you? If I remember correctly your former question, you give her milk to help her fall asleep? So it sounds like she needs to learn to fall asleep on her own without any 'crutches' if that makes sense. You could lie down and have her lie down too, keep physical contact to start with, then gradually move further as the days go. That way she will learn to fall asleep on her own without feeling 'abandoned'.

My mom fell asleep sitting on her hand. Her hand fell asleep and never "woke up". It's been limp, weak, and partially numb. What might be wrong?

If this long (I am assuming it has been present at least for a few days), it is not a circulation problem or (without trying to be trite) her hand would have turned black and fallen off. The answer after that depends on which nerve(s) were compressed, which your doctor should be able to assess by seeing which muscles are weak and where the numbness is.There are three major nerves that supply most muscles acting in the hand - radial, ulnar and median. The radial nerve (usually injured after someone falls asleep -often under the influence of drugs, alcohol or other sedating substances with compression in the upper arm - between shoulder and elbow, e.g. falling asleep with the arm over the back of a chair) would produce weakness of extension of the wrist and fingers (ability to raise them up to the ceiling with the arm outstretched and the palm facing down) and numbness in the first web space on the back of the hand (between the thumb and index finger). Injuries of the ulnar nerve (usually with compression behind the elbow - the ‘funny bone’ area) would produce weakness of many hand muscles but specifically difficulties in elevating the index finger to the ceiling with the arm stretched out in the hand shake position) or abducting (moving the baby finger away from the other fingers with the arm outstretched and the palm facing down) the baby finger and numbness mostly in the baby finger. The median nerve is much less likely to be affected after compression like this but if it were, the numbness would be more noticeable than weakness and affects the palmar (palm side, not back of the hand) aspect of the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring finger). Many things get better after this sort of injury (compression while asleep) but this depends on many factors including the mechanism and location of the nerve injury. If just the insulating material of the nerve (myelin sheath) is damaged, the recovery is often complete and occurs within 2–3 months). If the nerve ‘cable’ (axon) is affected, recovery takes longer (up to a year and sometimes longer) and less likely to be complete recovery. So, best thing is to have her see her doctor and then get a referral to a neurologist, especially one who can do or refer her for electrical studies of the nerves and muscles (“EMG/NCS”).Caveat - this advice is of a general nature only. Don’t rely on Quora to get accurate medical advice - see your doctor!!

What happens if you can't feel your arm after sleeping on it for hours?

If you hadn't woke up, or moved during your sleep to restore the blood flow, it wouldn't get to an extreme stage. The blood would usually just flow back in and after a short time will go back to normal. You may feel a little pain or discomfort for a while though. In severe cases, toxins start to build up in the blood that has been held back from flowing through. This is similar to what happens when you get a blood clot. The longer it is left before the blood flow gets restored, the more dangerous it becomes, that is why amputation is sometimes safer that restoring the blood flow. This usually will not happen over night, it takes at least a few days to become that severe, so don't worry about that.If it spends long enough with no blood flow or very little, the arm will start to die in a sense and become necrotic tissue which needs to be removed. It will not happen over night, all that would happen if you hadn't woken up at the time you did is that it would have gotten a little worse. Sometimes your brain can sense that these things are happening and wake you up to take care of it.It happens to me during the night when I have these dreams that I'm drowning, because something happened during my sleep which caused me to not be able to breathe, I wake up in a slight panic and manage to sort myself out.Don't worry about it too much, I manage to influence my sleep pattern slightly by getting into a certain position before I fall asleep and hold the intention of sleeping well and waking up in a good position. It might not be doing anything but I feel that it helps.Hope this answers your question

My 2 year old hurt his arm...and won't move it.?

Yesterday my mother in law watched my two year old son. She took him to a football game because her daughter was cheering, and then she took him to the park. She texted me when they got home letting me know he ate and is now napping. I picked him up around 6:30 and he was crying and saying ouch. We both checked his whole body and seen nothing wrong so then I figured it must be something we can't see....I noticed he was not using his left arm. So I moved it a little and he yelled out ouch. She said he had no falls at the park, or anywhere else. I don't think she would lie either. I took him home, and waited a hour to see if he would use his arm at all. He wouldn't and I could tell he was in pain. So I took him to the er. The nurses all thought he should get a xray..and could tell he was in pain. But when the doctor came in she looked at his arm for less than a minute and said if it doesn't get better to come back monday for a xray. I was so mad, but there were no other doctors that could see me apparently. I took him home, gave him motrin and put him bed because it was late. He woke up around 9am today and has not used it yet and has been whining off and on a bout it. I don't know if I should take him back to that same hospital or not. I just want him to get a xray to make sure there is nothing really wrong. The doctor said he probably bumped it, but it's more than bumping his arm. I really don't know what to do at this point I feel like no one has been helpful. He may of simply sprained his wrist but I want and need to know. I could take him to stat care but there not open either....I called his doctors office, there closed. I need some advice, I'm going crazy with worry.
