Ferret Or Rats Opinion

Should i get a Rat or ferret?

It's all about opinion and what you like. I would say a ferret though.

The first and third answers are wrong. Ferrets do not bite. It is a gentle play nip, and they can be trained to stop. Ferrets also love humans and are fun to play with.

Ferrets do not cost way over $300. I bought both of mine for $125 each. That leaves plenty of room for a cage, food and toys.

You should go to a pet store and interact with both. Do not assume all rats and ferrets will behave the same as the ones you interact with at a pet store. Maybe try a few different pet stores. Also, do some research online to see what you think you would like better.

EDIT: I was referring to initial cost. Any pet will cost way over $300 in a month or two. I thought you were referring to initial cost as well, not how much they will cost their entire lifetime.

Why don't people like ferrets!?

I pretty much did the same thing! In November I adopted my first ferret. I wanted one ever since I was little, but never thought I would go ahead this soon and adopt. I did and it's the best thing that I have ever done. She's such a sweetie and is such a good girl. She only smells when her littler box needs cleaning, but even that I don't smell much. I clean her often enough so you can barely tell she's even there. I don't think many people I know like them, but I don't care. I adore her and she makes me so happy. My boyfriend loves her. She has such a cute face and is a healthy fat! haha Mine steals my slippers, my boyfriends slippers, and bags. haha I had her whole pen full of toys and she was trying to play with the bag that was near the pen. It was so funny. She's so much like my puppy it's destiny. They are sisters separated at birth haha! They are even the same age and have the same name. I call her something else now though. I was telling my dog to be quiet this morning (barking at the cars outside) and my ferret stopped playing and I went "oh no!!!" hahha The ferrets are beyond entertaining and so sweet. They are one of a kind and I'm glad I went ahead and made one of my dreams come true. My cousin had one when I was little (like 6 years old) and I've wanted one since. I'm 23 now and again...best move that I made. I had a turtle and my Grandma told me to get rid of her (my other cousin took her and shes very happy with her turtle friends that my cousin already had). so it all worked out well. =) Enjoy your baby!

Edit: What horrible answers...I can't believe people would even say these things!

Leopard gecko, rat, ferret or guinea pig??

I had a leopard gecko. They are very boring. They don't do much but sit there. They're also expensive and annoying to take care of. I wouldn't get one. It's too much work for such a boring pet.

Rats are better pets. They're fun, friendly, cheap, playful, social, interactive and smart. They're entertaining. The cage doesn't cost much, only about 40 dollars. They're very easy to tame. They're fun to play with, and they will bond with you. I've had a few rats, and I was never bitten once. They can also be trained to sit and to stay. They're great pets, and are very easy to care for.

Ferrets are better pets, but they're expensive and hard to take care of. The cage is expensive and very big. Expect to pay over 100 dollars for the cage alone. It has multiple levels, which can be annoying to clean. But they're also very fun, smart and interactive. They will run around the house and play with you. A lot of them get along with cats and dogs. They're very playful, similar to dogs. Some even play fetch. They can also be litter trained. They will bite for the first week, but it's only out of play. Apple bitter or just saying 'ouch' can solve this problem. Weekly cage cleaning helps to keep the smell down. Tell your mom that they are born with scent glands, which is why they smell, but the glands are removed in captivity, which helps keep the smell down. That convinced my mom, but I ended up not getting one.

Guinea pigs are fun, but not as fun or playful as ferrets. They're expensive to take care of, and they need large cages. They need to live in groups of at least 2. They can't live alone.

Are ferrets or rats better pets?

Woah, you think rats stink? Do NOT get ferrets then. Rats shouldn't produce any smell if you clean their cage right, but ferrets are born with scent glands similar to that of a skunk. Some breeders and pet shops might take those glands out, but not all. If you can't stand a stinky pet, ferrets are NOT for you.

Your rats need more socialization, and you need more discipline. Cleaning the cage has a great reward - your room stops smelling like rat poop. Just work it into your weekly routine. I promise if you clean your cage often enough, the rats won't stink. Try looking up on the internet how to socialize rats.

Chinchillas can also live in a ferret cage, provided it's big enough. They are very expensive, but very adorable. Since you already have the cage, I'd say starting out with $350 will get you two chins (which is reccomended), and necessities. So yeah, not a cheap pet. Guineas, as far as I've heard, have different needs than a ferret cage. It needs to be pretty long, but not all that high. Degus and hedgehogs and sugar glider are other choice.

Should I get a ferret, rat, rabbit, guinea pig, etc.?

Hello everyone! I was hoping for a little advice on this important decision- my new pet. I plan to be getting a new addition to my family in September, so I'm researching as much as possible.
The main contenders are:
rats, ferrets, or rabbits.
I'm aware that ferrets and bunnies are larger commitments than rats, but I want a cute little buddy who will be willing to play and/or sit on the couch watching bad reality TV with me :P Something social is a must, and I'd like for the cost of everything to be roughly $200 or less. I don't have a preference on lifespan, either. Any ideas? I'd also like some guidelines on ferrets... I know they are sort of similar to rats in the fact that they need a hammock, toys, cage, etc. but do you need multiple? Are they sweet? Any inquires are welcome, there are no children or other pets.

Do ferrets make a sound?

Ferrets are usually very quiet pets. However, they can make a few sounds. The most common is their happy/playful/curious sound, called, “dooking” or “chucking”Ferrets can also scream when in intense pain. Luckily this is extremely rare, and is certainly something that needs investigated and likely will lead to a veterinarian visit ASAP!Otherwise, they tend to be very quiet pets. They may rattle their cages, when they want out…but, wouldn't you?
