Unfortunately no you cannot control the players directly. I recently bought this as a recommendation from a friend and I am addicted, you can control many aspects of the game, but all from a managerial side, no direct player control. Sorry. How about the manager modes in the Fifa 10/11 games - not the manager games? - you still can be manager, and you can play the matches as the players.

Can we play FIFA 14 with two keyboards?
Download a keyboard controller simulation software " key to joy" for this, it will show two different controllers after log in the game and then set the different the Key positions.ORI am trying to setup a multiplayer environment for FIFA 14 using two keyboards. To do so I've installed VJoy Virtual Joystick from here. I've been able to configure it with my laptop but the problem is it doesn't work on FIFA 14. A mi me parece muy bueno, ya lo tengo y ya deje el 12 atras jaja las graficas mejoraron, el control es igual aunque tiene el cambio de el juego al primer toque, se siente la diferencia cuando recibes un balon con un defensa sin experiencia por dar algun ejemplo, el ultimo PES que compre fue el 08 pero como trabajo en una tienda de videojuegos los he probado hasta el 13 para poder hablar sobre estos y yo prefiero los FIFA son mucho mas realistas. Why is pro-evolution soccer such a bad game, when compared to FIFA?
Well my friend you need rollback 10–12 years to really appreciate what Pro Evolution series has brought to soccer games.Up until Pro Evolution 6, EA Sports Fifa series was better in just one department which was fancy official players and teams(still without the rights for netherlands national team ) which was more of a non consideration as PES used to make up for everything else. And PES gave you so many options such as patches and player customization that you can built yourself a game with all the new transfers and players you had the option to make it even better.If you wanted to score outside the box or play a free flowing football there was only PES and EA sports FIFA was for the amateur just playing the fancy way. It all boils down to whose gameplay was better and it was always PES.Its actually harsh to criticize Konami or PES series as its only because PES pushed the limits each year that EA Sports had to improve and develop FIFA a series which is so successful now.P.S: Its like comparing Linux(PES) to Window(FIFA) and everyone know who has the bigger share of the pie.
