What kind of people should you meet with to start your filmmaking career?

Networking is not only a good thing. But in this industry it is the very fabric that gets projects done. And that is the sad truth to many. Almost everything happens through networking. However, as I have said elsewhere, networking is NOT what the industry is about. Professionals in the business don´t just hang out and network for the sake of networking. It’s not a social club. It is, at heart, a business. And in a business the cornerstone is the product. People meet and network around concrete products. So before you even start thinking about networking, you need something to offer; a couple of screenplays, that you’ve written - if you are a writer, or a couple of movies, that you’ve directed, if you are a director. So, if you are just starting out. Don´t worry about networking, just yet. Worry about getting at least 5 or 10 projects done so you have something to network about. And once you’ve done that, you should start thinking about how to get your scripts or movies out there. If you are a beginner, submitting them to good competitions, winning some awards, will get you i touch with some people. They may not be industry professionals just yet, but it will be a start.

What successful jobs can I pursue with a filmmaking degree?

Depends on what skills you acquire and how good you are as a “film maker.” There are plenty of jobs in the film industry in post production (film editing, film colorist, etc.). There are also jobs in the TV and TV studio industry.

How can I know if a career in film production is right for me?

This is an excellent question, and the question that I find is not asked often enough by people who are enamoured of the idea of filmmaking or the idea of Hollywood without actually having a taste of its work-a-day reality. It amazes me that intelligent people who are fans of cinema can go to film school and yet never really cut it or fit in in any department on a film set and end up ultimately not pursuing a career in film because somehow what they expected it to be and what it is never quite mesh. On the other hand there are a lot of people who are born into the business or stumble into the work quite by accident and do very well and love it.Ultimately I would suggest someone invest 6 months to a year in a major film market perhaps working as a production assistant to get a feel for the business and particularly I would have them focus on working in the tiniest positions for the biggest companies possible and avoiding any homegrown independent projects that they find on filmmaking forums or Craigslist. If after a year you're not having fun, not doing well, or feel uncomfortable about the business, it may not be for you... Or you just may need another year. Sometimes getting in and getting moving is the hardest part, which can be frustrating particularly when you see people get off a bus in Los Angeles and are working the next morning.
