Find A Job As A Political Activist

Should I Ieave my job and join politics?

No. Please don't.If you try to go through the history of AAP's MLAs, you will find that almost all of them have dedicated a certain part of their life in uplifting social standards of the common masses. They have worked toward the betterment of the society before joining active politics. AK , himself, has been a social activist for many years. First, try doing something in small proportions to make the area around you a better place. Find an NGO and work as a volunteer. Try teaching poor kids in your free time. Don't be hasty in your decision. It's not an easy job to selflessly serve the needy. Work toward it step by step. Your job will make sure that in initial years you don't have to worry about financial security before taking any important decision. A steady income forms the base, my dear. Take a leaf out of AK's life. He has mentioned a lot of times that the income generated by her wife's job made sure that he didn't have to worry about looking after the expenses of his family. It was the much needed support that he got. Get an experience and make it count. When the time is ripe, I am sure, you don't have to ask anybody before jumping into active politics. All the best.

Shouldn't people unable to find other jobs just join political parties?

Well, people can just join a political party, but they will remain as activist if they don’t have the so called political skills. Being an activist for political party isn’t a thing that would be useful for using your talent for growth of the state. We can’t just start as a leader at first, for that we need financial support as well as political. Though one start as activist will end up with nothing but an activist, if one is not that much politically sound. Besides, why would any leader would let one go up while he is always trying to do the same thing.Any politician has this one skill to keep his supporters happy, at least pretending that he is working for them and he is there for them only. Keeping people happy while keeping the current position (from opponents) and trying to go up anyhow are a few big things politician deal with. So, politics isn’t the thing that anybody would just join. Sometimes politicians do things that everyone would hate (we know few such politicians).Gandhi Fellowship like courses are encouraging us to be a leader. Of course, this would provide much pool of talent if it happens fairly. At last, there isn’t anything that we can’t do. Learn from great people and apply in there. It’s chaos. Left wing rhetoric. When did having a job become a "RIGHT".

What is the incentive for a person to join a likely-to-lose political campaign?

Barry Hampe makes excellent points. I would like to add another. Many a times, it is necessary to participate in making a political point. For instance, in India we do not yet have a system of rejecting political candidates offered by mainstream parties. As a voter or political activist one may find that these candidates are unsuitable for various reasons. Supporting 'Independent' candidates remains the only option. These candidates  often have very slender chance of garnering adequate votes to win. Electoral mathematics is funny. At the end of the day, a lot of people vote for the party leadership / policies and not a specific candidates. However, by supporting an independent candidate one can register one's protest against mainstream party candidates. The hope also is that over time sufficient groundswell of opinion may be created and the 'issues' that you are taking up, like say 'candidates untainted by corruption scandals', will come to fore in the calculations of political parties.
