Road Trip From Austin, TX To Sarasota, FL?

Personally I would just stick that Cobalt on a U-Haul car carrier and just tow it with the 24' er because it's just much easier on all involved
>Rent the trailer rather than the dolly
Day 1 will take you to Mobile AL
http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/check_avail?areaCode=&brandCode=DI,MQ,HJ,TL,RA,KG,SE,BU,BH&searchWithinMiles=25&areaType=1&destination=mobile&state=AL&country=US&checkInDate=12/07&numberAdults=1&numberRooms=1&checkOutDate=12/08&numberChildren=0&numberBigChildren=0&rate=000&smoking=any&bed=any&promotionCode=&corporateCode=&iataNumber=&variant=&id=15519&propBrandId=DI&force_nostay=false
And if you feel like doing something really cool take a tour of the USS Alabama
http://www.hnsa.org/ships/alabama.htm
Day 2 will take you to Sarasota
Expect to average about 45 -50 mph with that combo and get about 8-10 mpg
Play the gas game properly by figuring out which state has cheaper gas in it ;the one that you're about to leave or the one that you're about to enter and adjust your fill-ups accordingly\
Leave Austin early enough so that you won't get tangled in bound Houston traffic
As far as directions go :I would leave Austin On I-35 S head to San Marcos and then straight south to I-10 E thenit's I-10 to I 75S and into Sarasota
I don't what you're husband's experience with driving vehicles of that combo size are But driving on high speed 2 lane Texas roads would not be my first choice of a place to develop them if I didn't already have them
Stay with the interstates
Safe trip .

Update:
The reason that I suggested the trailer is not about saving money[ b/c given the cost of gas and the mpg of the Cobalt the trailer would come out to be the more expensive option ]But rather about you guys keeping each other company and keeping your mini caravan intact going down the road.
Trucks and cars are driven very differently and when couples do long distance moves such as you are doing it's often wisest and safest to simply forget about the idea of following driving each other and just set up pre-determined rendezvous points en route
Cell phones work well and walkie talkies are an excellent back up

What would be a nice mid way point to stop overnight for a road trip journey from Atlanta to New York?

Leave ATL after a hearty breakfast at either Ria's Bluebird or R. Thomas Deluxe. Point yourself toward Charlottesville, by way of Blacksburg and Roanoke. Walk around the UVa campus in the evening (particularly the Lawn). The next morning, tour Jefferson's Monticello on your way out of town. Be on the road by two and have supper in NYC.Richmond is a wonderful city and the most logical halfway stopping point if you're going for speed. I suggested this alternate stopping point and route becauseThe drive between Charlotte and Charlottesville will be very pretty, as will the Charlottesville/DC leg.Going through C'ville by way of Blacksburg only adds about an hour to the drive (versus going through Richmond). You're going from Big City to Biggest City, so why not have a stop in a beautiful town?Really, though, why would you want to leave the South?

Why do USA bound flights travel over the Atlantic ocean instead of Pacific ocean?

The best way to answer your question is to give you a practical example.I’d like you to do the following,Open another tab or browser windowGo to http://maps.google.comSelect a city, I’m selecting Mumbai.Left Click on your mouse, and select the last option “Measure Distance”Zoom out, and go to New YorkClick on NYC, and you will see the distance between the two countries (this will be the shortest distance, probably going over Europe and not the Equator), now measure the distance the other way around, and check the distance, you will notice a difference and the Atlantic route is much shorter compared to the Pacific route. The first Image shows (Atlantic) the distance between MUM -NYC to be 12,537 km and the other image shows (Pacific) 14,034 kmLess km travelled, means less fuel consumed, and if you see the route, there are more airports on the Atlantic Route as compared to the Pacific route, in case of any emergency. If you still want to learn more, I would suggest you take a string and globe in your hand and measure the distance between any two cities and check which one is shorter, you can continue this, and you will understand why airlines fly certain routes. Now, it also depends on which airline you are travelling and which side of USA you arep planning to land.

How safe is it to drive from Orlando to Key West?

The drive is long but there are no more dangers than there typically are during a long drive. For starters, you are driving on a highway so there is always the danger of getting into an accident. Pay attention to the road and you should be fine. Always check twice for motorcycles. The Florida weather is nice and the scenery is beautiful so there are bound to be a few motorbikes out for a ride. Also be weary of traffic. To get to Key West, you have to go through Miami. If you get there during rush hour, there could be standstill traffic so be prepared to go from 80 to 0 when you get close to the city. After you pass Miami, it's usually smooth sailing. UNLESS THERE'S A HURRICANE!!! We're getting close to Hurricane season so check your weather forecast! You don't want to be driving to Key West in a hurricane.Watch your speed! Up until about Miami, there are cops watching the roads so don't speed too fast. Keep with the flow and you should be good. Past Miami into the Keys, there are unmarked police. Watch out for those guys.Make sure you stay awake. The drive is long and it could go into the night. You don't want to fall asleep at the wheel, especially in the keys. Some stretches of road will have water close on both sides. There are lots of bridges. If you get to Miami and you are already tired, stop for a break. Get some coffee. If the drive does go into the night, pay attention for deer. They sometimes wonder into the road.Other than these things, I think you will be perfectly fine driving from Orlando to Key West. The roads are well maintained. Make sure you have quarters or Sun Pass for tolls though. They might do pay by mail (they take a pic of your plates and bill you) but I'm not 100% sure.Good luck on your trip and I hope this helps!

Do you still carry a bound atlas like the Rand-McNally when you take trips?

You bet I do.I made a good living owning a company that produced navigation software for the marine industry. One of the most important and demanded features of such a program was the ability to “zoom out” to display a big picture view.Of course, showing the one chart that covered half the east coast meant a huge loss of detail, which is why we decided to “stitch together” charts of differing scales in order to display such a large area. The borders of the charts that made up the “big picture” view were lightly outlined on the display, and at any time the navigator could right click within such a border and “zoom in” to a chart that contained much more information about the smaller area covered by that chart.Devices designed to give turn by turn visual instructions about how to get from Bangor, Maine to Rochester, NY are fine in terms of driving directions. And such devices will usually instruct you to drive on the interstate system. But such devices are abysmal when it comes to proving an overall view of a large area, such as half of a state. Thus you miss information that might change your mind about how to get to Rochester, where as the paper road atlas will clearly show you a very interesting route north of Interstate 90 that will take you through northern Massachusetts along the history Mohawk Trail (State Route 2), which in western Mass follows Wheeler Brook up over the Appalachian Mountains and down into Troy, New York. The tree colors along this alternative to interstate travel are amazing in the fall, but you’d never know that without a detailed paper road atlas. When my wife and I are on long road trips, the driver dutifully follows the directions provided by the GPS based navigation system, while passenger periodically scans a bound road atlas to see if there are any interesting alternatives to the boring interstate we are on.That’s how we discovered such wonders as the Mohawk Trail, as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway:
