Why does one get a blurry eyes and runny nose with allergies?

The immune system’s response to an irritant is to produce mucus. In the case with allergies, the irritants are allergens. There’s mucous membrane throughout the body and this membrane is lined with cells that produce mucus. The runny nose — rhinorrhea — is a prime example of allergic response. The mucus produced traps irritants and we cough and sneeze them out. The nasal vestibule has a ready made exit — the nares — so the mucus simply flows out (rhinorrhea). In the eyes, tears remove irritants and when we shed tears, the excess go through the nasolacrimal duct and out the nose.

Questions on adult-onset allergies (hay fever)?

If you've developed hay fever as an adult and have tried to treat it, what has worked the best for you?

Did you go to an allergist? What was the outcome?
Did you try anything else?

Thanks.

Allergies: Good enough reason to miss work?

My work is really dry and dusty and ever since I've been working there my skin and eyes have always been itchy and red, and now i've woken up with swollen pig eyes...I was planning on going to a medicentre to see if its an eye stye or an allergic reaction. Is this a valid excuse to call into work for? I work at wal-mart! They didn't let me leave to watch kids for my sister when she needed it, and made me come in, in the winter the next day after my sick day from the flu!

p.s--I need this part-time job to pay for my tuition, so I can't just up and quit, becuase they actually give me the limited hours I need.

Eye infection keeps coming back?

Hey Tracy,
An eye infection typically doesn't last for 2 weeks and typically doesn't "come and go".

Without seeing your eyes firsthand, my best guess is that you have allergies or dry eye. Both can cause the eyes to be red and irritated. Allergies will cause more of an itchy feeling, where dry eye will cause more of a sandy/gritty feeling.

The red eyes and irritation certainly has nothing to do with changing vision in your eyes. If you vision was changing, you would notice that things are blurry at certain distances and it would stay consistently blurry.

I would try using an artificial tear on a regular basis and see if that helps you. My personal favorite is Systane Balance (comes in a purple box) but other good drops are Optiv (in a green bottle), Tears Naturale (clear/white bottle), Refresh, and Blink.

Put one drop in each eye at least every 4 hours, but more often if you'd like. Doing this on a regular basis will help prevent your eyes from getting dry in the first place. And if you have allergies, it will help flush out allergens in the eye. You can also keep the eye drops in the refridgerator and the cold will have a nice soothing effect on the eye. And then you know you got them in too because you'll feel the cool.

Preservative-free drops are also a good choice to try, just in case you have any reaction to the preservative in the eye drops. Definitely stick with the name-brand eye drops because they are the newest formulations. Generic artificial tears often have older preservatives that can be more irritating to the eyes.

And stay away from any eye drops that say "get the red out". They'll do nothing for your red eyes because all they do is constrict the blood vessels in your eyes. They do not actually fix the problem.

Now if they artificial tears don't make your eyes feel better in a week or two, then you should see an eye doctor to see what else may be causing your red and irritated eyes.
