Food Poisining Symptoms When Am I Safe

What are the symptoms of food poisoning and how long untill symptoms show up?

Food poisoning is a common, usually mild, but sometimes deadly illness. Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea that occur suddenly (within 48 hours) after consuming a contaminated food or drink. Depending on the contaminant, fever and chills, bloody stools, dehydration, and nervous system damage may follow. These symptoms may affect one person or a group of people who ate the same thing (called an outbreak).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in the United States, food poisoning causes about 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and up to 5,000 deaths each year. One of the most common bacterial forms of infection, the salmonellae organisms, account for $1 billion in medical costs and lost work time.
Worldwide, diarrheal illnesses are among the leading causes of death. Travelers to developing countries often encounter food poisoning in the form of traveler's diarrhea or "Montezuma’s revenge." Additionally, there are possible new global threats to the world's food supply through terrorist actions using food toxins as weapons.

How long do food poison symptoms last?

First of all, there really is no medicine for food poisoning, unless you count Pepto Bismol. It is just one of those things that has to work its way out of your system naturally. Secondly, every time I've had food poisoning (about 7 or 8 times in my life), it has usually started up about 4 or 5 hours after eating the tainted food, and lasted at least all night long, with the throwing up and whatnot. Then, after all that is over, you just feel like crap for about 10-12 more hours, and you can't get comfy no matter what you do because you're all achy and tingly all over, and then after that, you get a sudden relief from symptoms which lasts about 2-3 hours, just long enough to convince yourself you're well enough to eat something really inappropriate for the situation, like pizza or a bologna sandwich, which unfortunately takes you right back to Step One for another 4 hours or so, and then you wake up the next morning feeling tired and sore but otherwise fine, and HUNGRY!!!!! So, I would say it lasts about 24-36 hours.

Is it safe to stop Augmentin after food poisoning, when Doctor said I can?

To clear up your infection completely, take Augmentin for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.

Antibiotics often cause diarrhea because they kill off all the good bacteria in the gut (augmentin, which is pretty harsh, is one of the worst for this).

If you stop the antibiotic early though, you run the risk of creating "super germs" that are even more antibiotic resistant.
By not completing the regimen prescribed, some bacteria might be left behind that were antibiotic exposed but still alive. They can then multiply and create more bacteria that are now resistant to the antibiotic you were taking. Ever heard of MRSA? MRSA has been in the news in the last year. MRSA is methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus. MRSA is one example of a superbug. VRE, or vancomycin resistant enterococci, is another. Research has indicated that these superbugs were created through both overuse and misuse of antibiotics. Unlike what one of the answerers stated above, do not take antibiotics for viral infections. This is a good example of antibiotic misuse/overuse. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections ONLY.

So, can you stop taking antibiotics early? Yes. You can and you likely wouldn't experience any immediate negative effect. BUT you risk leaving behind bacteria that can create an army of bacteria in your body which can potentially cause problems for you down the road. The next time you get an infection, you risk having the antibiotic not work for you.

Taking Cipro with alcohol has the potential of causing drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. Taking flagyl with alcohol should be avoided because flagyl and alcohol together can cause severe nausea, vomiting, cramps, flushing, and headache.

My suggestion would be to complete your antibiotic course, drink some Coke (with no liquor in it!)

Can You Take Tums When You Have Food Poisoning?

If it's really food poisoning, there's not much you can do besides ride it out. Even if you could keep them down, Tums won't help one bit, other than maybe temporarily get the sour acid taste out of your mouth from the vomiting. If it's a garden variety bout of food poisoning, e.g. salmonella, or campylobacter, it'll mean several days of sheer misery, followed by a slow, roughly week-long period where you'll feel like you've been through the wringer. All that diarrhea and vomiting will dehydrate you, so as soon as you can keep anything down, drink lots of water, and maybe Gatorade to restore your state of hydration. If you start running a major fever, then it's time to see a doc.

What's the best way to get over food poisoning?

Food Poisoning Treatment, Food Poisoning Self-Care at HomeDo not eat solid food while nauseous or vomiting but drink plenty of fluids.- Small frequent sips of clear liquids (those you can see through) are the best way to stay hydrated.- Avoid alcoholic, caffeinated, or sugary drinks. Over-the-counter rehydration products made for children such as Pedialyte and Rehydralyte are expensive but good to use if available.- Sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade are fine for adults if they are diluted with water because at full strength they contain too much sugar, which can worsen diarrhea.- Home remedies to treat nausea or diarrhea such as tea with lemon and ginger can be used for relief from symptoms. There are no proven herbal food poisoning cures. Consult a health care practitioner before taking any natural food poisoning remedies. After successfully tolerating fluids, eating should begin slowly, when nausea and vomiting have stopped. Plain foods that are easy on the stomach should be started in small amounts. Initially consider eating rice, wheat, breads, potatoes, low-sugar cereals, lean meats, and chicken (not fried). Milk can be given safely, although some people may experience additional stomach upset due to lactose intolerance. Most food poisonings do not require the use of over-the-counter medicines to stop diarrhea, but they are generally safe if used as directed. It is not recommended that these medications be used to treat children. If there is a question or concern, always check with a doctor.http://www.emedicinehealth.com/f...

If you heat up mayo , do you get food poisoning ?

Depends. Bacteria depend on time and temperature to grow. Room temperature is the perfect temperature for harmful bacteria to grow on food. The growth rate for bacteria is exponential. What this means is that bacteria can grown fast enough to produce colonies large enough (in about 4 hours) to make you sick.

You can heat up mayo, but follow the safety rules that the health department recommends:

1) Keep foods out of the danger zone. The danger zone is the temperature range of 41 F - 135 F..

The temperature of 41 F, by the way, is about the temperature your fridge keeps food at. Boiling water reaches about 212 F. If you have a digital thermometer, it will make it easier to check the temps of hot and cold food.

2) Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Hot food should be held at 135 F and above for no more than four hours. Cold foods should be kept no higher than 41 F for seven days.

Food should be kept out of the danger zone. If the food is in the danger zone, serve it within 4 hours, heat it to 165 F, or cool it

Reheat cold, cooked foods to 165 F before serving. Cool hot foods rapidly for storage in the fridge. Ideally, hot food should be down to 41 F within 6 hours to keep bacteria from growing.

If you follow these rules with hot or warm mayo, then you will not need to worry about food poisoning.

By the way, the health department classifies mayo as a a potentially hazardous food (food capable of growing bacteria). Food does not have to be bad to grow harmful bacteria. As a matter of fact, the type of bacteria that makes food go bad and the type of bacteria that make you sick are NOT the same type of bacteria.

For example, the type of deadly bacteria that causes botulism does not cause the food to spoil. The contaminated food does not taste bad, smell bad or look bad. This is why people die from botulism.... they can't smell, taste or see it.

How do I complain to the restaurant that gave me food poisoning?

It's nearly impossible to PROVE that you got food poisoning from a specific restaurant. Unless the Health Department takes samples of the specific food you ate and find toxins or viruses on that food. This rarely happens unless at least two or more people get sick from eating the same food at the same restaurant on the same day, which they call an "outbreak".Some food borne illness manifests symptoms quickly, but most take as long as 6–8 hours. Salmonella poisoning can take up to 72 hours to manifest symptoms. You could poison yourself at home at breakfast and then feel those symptoms after a perfectly safe lunch at a restaurant.Reporting an illness to a manager or owner will result in an apology and likely nothing more.Reporting it to the Health Department is not a bad thing to do. It puts scrutiny on the restaurant and requires them to be more aware. If you and one other person report the same illness and they find fault with the restaurant, they’ll shut that restaurant down temporarily and it’s likely the media will cover it, causing the restaurant to shut down completely.

How do I give myself food poisoning?

Not guaranteed to work :)But here’s how I lost 20 lbs in 6 days. My wife’s a good cook and had made this excellent chicken curry and I liked it so much that I heaped my plate with rice and this curry. I couldn’t finish it all, and saran wrapped my plate with the left overs and stuck it in the refrigerator to snack later.Couple of hours later, reheated the leftovers in a microwave and finished it all off.2 hours later started the worst bout of vomiting I had ever had in my life, which lasted 3 days. After the initial emptying of the contents in my belly, all I could puke out was bits of mucus but it wouldn’t stop. I was so nauseated that I wouldn’t let my wife cook anything, as the slightest smell would make me gag. I was so drained and paranoid, I refused to rehydrate (fear of throwing up) and after 3 days I had to go in to the emergency and given IV drips and medications to stop the nausea, and get back to being able to sip water, jello etc.It took me few days to recover, a hefty emergency visit bill of few thousand dollars which is another story in itself as the hospital I went to was of a different insurance network and the emergency visit bills and paperwork got totally messed up and this 2.5k bill landed in collections. (Eventually I was able to get the 2 parties to talk and clear up the payment and I only had to shell out $550 late fees / charges that the parties disagreed on. At that point of time I was glad to pay just to get this nonsense behind me)So my reluctance to chuck 1/2 cupful of rice and really tasty curry in the trash resulted in me having to take a week of sick leave, drove my wife nearly nuts, got a big medical bill that threatened my credit history and me shed 22 lbs.Women friends would joke to me to help them loose 20lbs in 7 days when they heard of this incident.

Should i still take my omeprazole if i have food poisoning?

I had food poisoning on monday and today i'm still experiencing diarrhea. I am supposed to be taking omeprazole daily but i feel as if these pills are prolonging my symptoms for food poisoning. Would appreciate some advice

Can onions cause food poisoning?

Rumor claims bacteria on cut onions and potatoes cause more food poisoning than spoiled mayonnaise.Onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.  It's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator. It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you.if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.
