Forgetting To Breathe When I Sleep Help

Forgetting to breathe and dying in my sleep?

So I've been trying to sleep for the past few hours and whenever I'm about to, I suddenly feel my heart beat so fast as I automatically try to catch my breath as if I forgot to breathe while falling asleep!

Please, can anyone tell me what this is and if it's really bad? I can't sleep now because of the shock and I tried to read many articles. Most of them said about a lack in potassium or electrolyte imbalance.

But can anyone please tell me their opinion about this! I'm so worried and I don't think I can sleep without an answer! I'm sorry for the long detail but I can't help it. Please help me!

Forgetting to breathe when I fall asleep?

Do you have anxiety? When my anxiety disorder first presented itself, I had this exact same problem. It has since gone away.

EDIT: it might. Now that it's been happening though I'm willing to bet you're worrying about it and actually causing it to happen by fearing stopping breathing and making yourself wake up the instant you fall asleep. Your best bet is to just relax, maybe try meditating a while before bed time, have a winding down time and try to keep your mind off of it.

Forgetting to breathe while sleeping?

Sometimes, I can't breathe when I am sleeping, like I forget or something, so it is as bad as a nightmare. I will be so disoriented when I am sleeping that I think it takes a lot of effort, even when it doesn't. When I finally muster up enough strength to breathe, I find myself gasping for air. I know it sounds weird, but maybe this is happening to someone else? It is scary and I don't know what to do. I know that breathing is supposed to be 1st nature, but it seems that it is not while i am sleeping. BTW, I do not have Asthma or anything like that, although my sister does. Help?

I keep forgetting to breathe?

Ever since I was little once I've become aware of breathing I have to take over manually until I gradually forget and I becomes automatic again, but recently out of nowhere I'll get a slightly uncomfortable in my lungs and I'll notice I've not been breathing. I'm not out of breath as I always notice pretty soon, but then it takes me a long time for the breathing to become automatic again, it's like I'm holding my breath unconsciously.

I never wake up out of breath and it never happens while I'm waking up or going to sleep. Also sometimes it feels as though I'm not breathing deeply enough and I have to yawn or take a deep breath so it looks I sigh quite a lot.

Could these be linked? I'm only 15 and I don't smoke, neither do my immediate family or any of my friends' families so I'm almost never around smoke. I'm not overweight or underweight, but I don't get much exercise, so would increasing my exercise help me at all? I'm also a picky eater, so are there any vitamins that I could be lacking?

My living room is quite stuffy and not very well ventilated and as it's still cold we don't have windows or doors open, but when we change the air I find breathing a little easier, could the stale air also cause this?

Last year I began running but after about a mile I had to stop because I could not breathe and I have panic attacks if I run for too long. Is there something wrong with my respiratory system or do I literally need to get out more?

Forgetting to breath?

Hello. I am a 12 year old female, and here is my problem:
I keep forgetting how to breath. Often times i ll be focusing SO much on another subject, that I will end up not breathing. It s like i m holding my breath, but I can t feel it! For example, exhale slowly, and near the end, just stop breathing, but don t hold your breath. Ahh, this is so hard to explain!!! Anyways, please help me!

Why did I forget how to breathe when I woke up?

When I was 7 I once woke up out of the blue; my chest was tight and I couldn’t remember how to breathe and my body just wouldn’t let me, I was gasping for air but none would go into my lungs, I couldn’t breathe for a good 2-3 minutes until I was about close to passing out from lack of oxygen and then all of a sudden I was fine and there wasn’t anymore tightness I was just fine.evwr since then I’ve been constantly aware of my own breathing, blinking and my heart beat. It’s only happened once since then, I’m 16 now, it happened about three weeks ago I woke up out of no where I couldn’t breathe my chest was tight and I was freaking out and I’m not sure why this happened, it’s not a frequent thing and I know my dad has sleep apnea but I’m pretty sure it’s not hereditary and his isn’t even that bad. Can anyone explain what’s going on

I feel like I forget to breathe, please help?

I feel like that too often. I get panicky when I notice.

When you relax or sleep you breathe very lightly because your body requires less oxygen to function (muscles use oxygen & if you're still you're not using as many). So being very relaxed can cause this and if you are zoned out and come back to action, realizing you've been breathing so lightly can be frightening causing extra deep breaths (hence the thumping heart).

Do not worry. People don't just stop breathing unless they're having a heart attack or allergic reaction. If you feel fine your body will continue to breath. You don't have to remember to breath :)

Sometimes my body forgets to breathe when I'm about to fall asleep. What could be the cause of this?

The body doesn't forget, especially vital life functions like the breathing. What you are feeling is the “catch" in your breathing as your body switches from conscious breath control to the deep, slow automatic breathing of sleep.

Can people forget to breathe?

The way you’ve phrased your question suggests that you think breathing is a conscious process. However, you are likely to have noticed that you continue to breathe when you aren’t paying attention, or when you’re asleep! The fundamental rhythm of breathing that drives your respiratory muscles is generated by brain cells in the brainstem, right above the spinal cord. In addition to generating the rhythm of breathing, cells in this part of the brain do things like regulate your blood pressure, heart rate and blood glucose. The brainstem keeps you alive.Again, you will have noticed that it’s possible for us to consciously ‘take over’ control of our respiratory muscles to do things like cough, laugh or talk, but these are the exception and not the rule. Having conscious control over our respiratory muscles is only advantageous to us as long as we stop doing those things long enough to breathe! In the case of your anecdotal person, it’s unlikely that they ‘forgot’ to breathe. That suggests the absence of a positive influence on breathing when, in fact, the opposite is more likely to be true. It’s more likely that they were actively overriding the brainstem’s breathing control center by engaging in whatever behaviour they were engaged in at the time (unless they were sick, as suggested by Andrew J. Sarnat).

How can you forget to breathe?

Breathing is controlled subconsciously by the most part ( controlled by the brain stem, which also controls heartbeats and other systematic functions ). Think about it, if someone is unconscious/ knocked out they continue breathing. It's a process that dosent require thinking, it just happens. But breathing can also be controlled through the conscious mind. It's nothing special to do so. Just hold your breath for a few seconds and there ya go.For your question though, you can't really forget to breath, there are probably cases of this so called occurrence. But that would be from my understanding a brain malfunction. You also said breathing seems like a muscle memory, which isn't the case. A muscle memory is the continuous repititon of a conscious act until it becomes a non conscious act. Where it would be then controlled without thought. But breathing wasn't ever something you had to consciously think of and repeat until it became a subconscious process. When your life began it was already an act controlled subconsciously by the brain stem. hope you got some clarification from this answer, thanks for reading.
