How can I recover data from a memory card that asks to format?

Forgot all these spammy links which need money to get working, here is a free and powerful method to get the job done.Plugging in the SD card into your PC to find out it is not getting detected could be the worst nightmare for anyone having thousands of pictures, music and other important data onto it. I have shared many How-to's and utilities to help users recover data but sadly all of them failed or were unable to recover all data on the SD-card which came to me for recovery. After doing a lot of research on why my computer is asking me to "Format" the SD-card instead of reading it's content, I was pretty sure the culprit was a bad file-system boot sector. While 99.9% of the data recovery applications, both free and paid relied upon the same method to "Scan" and find data from the disk bypassing the file-system "registry" of the files, I was looking for something which will allow me to play with the damaged boot sector of the file-system to recover the underlying "file record registry". Luckily, what I found was not only open-source and free but supported advanced features which nothing else offered, the utility supported NTFS, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, ext2, ext3, ext4, btrfs, BeFS, CramFS, HFS, JFS, Linux Raid, Linux Swap, LVM, LVM2, NSS, ReiserFS, UFS and XFS filesystem and came with cross-platform binaries which can run under DOS, Windows (NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, Windows 7 (x86 & x64), Windows 10, Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, SunOS and MacOS X.The gem, I found was TestDisk - a powerful, free and open-source (GPLv2) data recovery software designed to help users recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again.TestDisk supports:Fixing partition tables and recovery of deleted partitionsRecovery of FAT32 boot sector from backupRebuilding of FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sectorFixing of FAT tablesRebuilding NTFS boot sectorRecovery of NTFS boot sector from its backupFixing MFT using MFT mirrorLocating ext2/ext3/ext4 Backup SuperBlockRecover deleted files from FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystemRead more: How To Fix And Recover Full Data From Corrupt SD Card Asking For Format | Megaleecher.Net http://www.megaleecher.net/Free-...

How many photos can be held on a 16GB flash memory stick?

It will be able to hold up to 5000 pictures easily all depending on as you already said the mega pixels , detail, etc. But you should be able to get 5000 without any problems. Thats the average with a 10 MP camera. Most digital cameras are around 7 mp. So you should be getting around 8000 if you have the average camera.. ;p

Also you could just go take a picture, transfer it to your computer right click it go to properties, see how many MB it takes up and you'll figure out how much space each picture would approximately take up and you'll figure out how many can fit into 16 GB.

In terms of convenience you could get a 16 GB Sd Card for your camera, so you don't have to constantly transfer them to a USB. Or just get both, because if you lose either the USB or Sd card you lose all those pictures D:

Why is my 32GB Sony Flash pendrive showing 28 GB?

It is just the way advertisements are made. The difference is between measurement of disk space which varies from Microsoft's Windows, Linux and Manufacturers.Manufacturers use standard metric to calculate the storage space1000B = 1KB,1000KB = 1MB,1000MB = 1GB,1000GB = 1TB and so onwhere as windows measures the same using binary machine language1024B = 1KB,1024KB = 1MB,1024MB = 1GB,1024GB = 1TB and so on.Now your 32GB Sony's pen drive actually contains 32,000,000 (standard metric) / 1024*1024*1024 (binary machine language) which gives you around 30.5GB of usable space. This is how storage subsystems work. The controller in the Pen drive sets aside about 10% of the disk space in order to use it as spare drive area as the physical drive wears out, partition/disk information + some space is also occupied by System Volume Information. So, for a 32GB drive, this is around 2.5GB. And finally your drive shows 29.5~GB.

How do I format my 8GB SD card that is showing 121MB of RAW format?

I assume that you just want to format the memory card , and not interested in recovering the photos, if you want to recover the photos use the solution provided by Michael T. Lauer's answer After recovering, when you format the card in Windows or the OS you use, uncheck Quick Format and proceed. If this fails go to Disk Management ( through control panel , or by typing in start menu ) Identify the disk or memory card( probably Disk1 , Disk2 ) If you see more than one volume under the required disk, right click and " Delete the Volume " Once you delete all the volumes in the required disk, format again and check.

Is it possible to get back our data after formatting pen-drive? if yes then how?

Yes it is possible but the problem here is the data must not be overwritten to the previously used space i.e suppose if you transfer some data of size say 1 MB onto a 2 GB pendrive, then if you delete this 1 MB file. Now if you upload a new file of say 1 MB or more, here the newest data must not be written to the previously used space then only the previously deleted data can be recovered. The software used is Recuva. It shows you whether you can recover the file back or not by using three colors:Red-not recoverableYellow-recoverable but can't say whether the file will work/playGreen-recoverable and can be used backYou can recover from your Windows computer, digital camera, memory card, mp3 player and other data storage drives. The software can be downloaded for free from https://www.piriform.com/recuvaNote: However you can't control how the data has to be written onto a pen drive/storage drive.

Why does my SanDisk 8GB memory card show only 7.42 GB of usable space?

There are 3 different reasons behind the less memory shown on your external storage device:Different operating systems treat your disk differently. Windows OS may not show the disk space like Linux, Mac or Unix. There are little discrepancies between the file formats and algorithms used by different operating systems.A portion of memory space in your external storage is reserved for system files and data sector for better performance. By default your pen drive is on NTFS format and some space is required for memory allocation. This is the primary reason behind the less usable space than the mentioned space. The root cause of the difference of what is printed on the box of the external device and the actually displayed memory in the computer is is the calculation method used by the disk manufacturing companies. Our computers work on base 2 (binary) number system rather than the decimal system. One megabyte of the product you are using is equal to 1,000,000 bytes in decimal base, but for a computer it is 1,048,576 bytes in binary base. For each gigabyte advertised in base 10, you're actually receiving about 70 megabytes less than a gigabyte in base 2. Manufacturers of disk drives will usually publish a disclaimer in this respect that the figures stated by them are in the base 10 of the number system. This is the reason that the memory displayed in our computers appears to be less than what is actually given by the manufacturers. The manufacturers do not cheat the people in this respect.
