Four Tips On How To Select Suitable Accounting Software

Tips on becoming a great writer?

I love to write, I am currently a college student trying to decide between being a journalist or a lawyer. I eventually want to be a full time fiction writer. Any advice?

In accounting, when you make a trial balance, does it matter what order you list your accounts?

I think you are asking whether it matters what order you list your General Ledger accounts in. When you are creating a chart of accounts in accounting software, each account is assigned a number.

The goal is always to put the accounts in the order they would appear on the financial statements, but there are always exceptions--especially after several years of adding new accounts each year. If you don't start with a system that has enough digits, for example, you will run out of room to add new accounts. Financial statements almost always have line items that consist of several accounts added together as well, so one then must decide which order to put the summing accounts in.

The answer is yes, if you are interested in the organization of the accounts, but no if you are just trying to see if your accounts balance quickly. Either way, the numbers should all add up to zero (or current year net income if you haven't closed it out to equity yet).
