Is health care billing a fraud?
My wife's HMO just sent us a summary statement of medical care bills and payments for all of 2008. You tell me -- doesn't this amount to grand fraud? 1. total charges [excluding double billing caused by HMO delaying for months] 33,343.80 2. Allowed by contract [also includes 437.37 that hasn't yet been been ruled as allowed or denied] 8312.78 In other words, the amounts "billed" by the hospitals, lab operations, physicians, clinics, radiologists, etc. were FOUR times the amounts they'd actually agreed to accept as full payment from the HMO. Now, if you didn't have an insurance company bargaining for you, the hospitals, et al, would be trying to collect FOUR times as much from you as they really expect to get, and really "should" get. FOUR FREAKING TIMES AS MUCH !! *** Aside: for everyone who asks in these forums about paying their medical bills -- the bill is a fraud. Provider never expected to get anywhere near that much. Don't pay it. Offer them far less -- it's all they every expected to get anyway. [The public hospital was the worst -- billing at FIVE times the amount they'd agreed to accept. By comparison, the regular doctor was only billing 1.6 times the allowed amount. Specialists were billing from two to four times the amounts they'd agreed to.] *** Now, if your banker was billing you for FOUR TIMES as much interest as he actually expected to collect, you'd call it fraud, wouldn't you? And isn't it just as much a fraud when the public hospital district bills at FIVE TIMES what it expects to get -- and then sues the poorest people [who don't have insurance] for the WHOLE FREAKING AMOUNT? Ye Gods above -- no wonder unexpected medical expense is the leading cause of bankruptcy in America. Most of the bills are frauds from moment one.

Fortunately, I only had to use the healthcare facilities in Korea a couple of times, Not because I wanted to avoid Korean healthcare, but rather just because I am normally fairly healthy.Korean healthcare is not free to its citizens, although it is about one tenth the cost of what the US system would charge for services.I can only give two examples of what I am talking about. I was an English teacher there and at one point had a doctor from the big hospital in town as a student. We would spend time chatting about the difference in the cost of healthcare in Korea and America. That’s where I came up with the figure of roughly one-tenth the cost for Korean healthcare based on a comparison of costs for operations that I happened to know about.The second situation came about when I had to visit an emergency room for some reason which I no longer remember and I only knew of the one big hospital, the same one where the doctor practiced, to go to. I was there for like six and a half hours and I was starting to freak out at what my bill was going to be. I had read enough horror stories about the cost of emergency rooms in the US for me to have some real concerns.After getting the treatment for whatever it was that was wrong with me the total bill including prescription drugs came to a little over $800. I sighed a big sigh of relief. My Korean friends thought the cost was staggeringly expensive because I had gone to the biggest and most expensive hospital in town.The cost would probably been a lot less if I had had any kind of health insurance. That’s about my only personal knowledge of Korean healthcare.

Probably not, since it was a Republican- Mitt Romney product in the first bloody place….. and it's unlikely it can be erased without significant public outcry…..oh, wait, the outcry is already happening. One of the reasons it's being labelled a failure is because Republicans are compelled to badmouth anything Obama did, even if it was their frigging idea. They can get away with this because Republican is nowadays the party of stupid, its wilfully blind adherents will never find out, and will obediently hate anything they're pointed at without checking a single fact. Indefensible stupidity. Elective nincompoopery. In an age of information, ignorance is a choice.Rising premium rates? They were rising like rockets anyway because insurance companies live to gouge. Also, uncertainty about the U.S. healthcare future incited by Republicans freaks out insurance companies, who do not like uncertainties. Further, when the ACA was first written, the stupid (Republican)insistence that there be a State opt-out clause pretty much ensured the plan would be underfunded. The American proclivity to refuse to chip in even if it hurts their neighbor (or especially if it hurts their neighbor) is very creepy and inhuman to this particular Canadian. We have mandated pay-in (under $100/mo) for everybody,& everybody benefits. We don't feel forced or put upon, we feel smart and cared for (&free to work wherever we want). We are much more free than Americans.Perhaps when civilization reaches America, they'll realize what a boon it can be. Perhaps when information reaches America, they'll realize they're looking at Republicans picking on a Republican healthcare plan. And one that would likely work well if they'd just do the tweaks.
