Do you feel doubtful about telling your NIT name to a stranger?

I belong to SVNIT, Surat.I received many awkward replies when I say my college name to someone who asks me where I study.I am from Andhra Pradesh. When someone asks me about my college, our conversations would be like..He : Where do you study?Me : NIT, Surat. He : (Even before I complete) Nit Suratkal??Me : No, NIT SURAT.  -_-He : Ok.He : Where do you study?Me : NIT, Surat. He : Surat??!! Where is it? (Yes. They asked me this. They do not know that there exists a place called Surat in India)Me : A place in Gujarat.(And they reply as if they grew up there)He : Gujarat! Modi's Land! I have been to Ahmedabad once. Very pleasant place.Me : -_- (In my mind: Thank God, At least you knew Ahmedabad). He : Where do you study?Me : NIT, Surat. He : Why did you go so long? When there are so many good colleges in Hyderabad.Me : -_- (In my mind: Its NIT and not any simple engineering college like the ones in Hyderabad where every 12th pass would get a seat.)Such replies about my college are not just from my home state which is around 600 miles away. I received few awkward replies even in Gujarat. When I say I got to go to SVNIT to an autowala, generally at railway stations, they are like.. “Where is that?”. Autowalas’ do not knew that it is named SVNIT now. They still call it SVREC or Ichchhanath college(Ichchhanath is the place in Surat where the college is located). And this is most embarrassing..We(3 members) went to a college in Vadodara in regard of publicity team of our college Technical Fest. We met the college Principal and said that we are from SVNIT and some blah blah. He replied, “But you came just a 3 days back?”My friend : No sir, we are here for the first time.Principal : No I remember a group from SVIT did come to our college 3 days back.My friend : Sir, we are from National Institute of Technology, Surat.Principal : Oh Oh! I am sorry. Your college names are so similar.

Svnit or nit surat, do you not all think that these two are different colleges when we are outside Gujarat?

I'm from south, when someone asks me about my education my answer will be I'm pursuing btech from NIT Surat though the actual name of the college is SVNIT(named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel).this is also confusing for the students who are giving the options during counselling for nits there they'll not find nit Surat instead it's svnit and then there is this confusion between Surat and suratkal..when I say Nit Surat the most common immediate question is NIT suratkal?? Come-on Surat is a popular city u may not be knowing about Nit in Surat but compared to suratkal,Surat is more popular I guess

How was your first day at NIT Surat (SVNIT)?

I would like to share this experience of mine.I came to GAJJAR BHAVAN-1st year hostel on 26th July and saw a huge crowd near the corner of the hostel gate. I went there and saw a 2 security guards managing crowd. Somehow I signed the muster and went up to my room. I already checked out my room on the day of physical reporting so there were no surprises. I set up the room with my mother's help and then contacted a senior so that he could guide me what to do next. According his advise, I went to purchase a new bicycle as the distance between hostel and new CRC[Class Room Complex] is too much to walk. While I was driving my cycle back from the shop to the hostel suddenly it started raining heavily! Somehow I managed to reach the hostel. After all the formalities we're completed we(me and my parents) had lunch in the mess and I realized that I was going to be separated for my parents in few minutes. After that, I accompanied them to the car and tried to maintain a smiling face while my mom started sobbing, I hugged my mom and dad for what seemed an eternity and bade them farewell, from this point I was on my own. Fast forward few hours, me and my school friend(who happened to get a room just besides mine) came from mess after completing our dinner (by the way food here is amazing) and as we entered my room, lights went out. We waited for sometime for electricity to get restored but that wasn't going to happen anytime soon. We slept without fan on the very first night(amazing first impression of the hostel life). Next morning I woke up around 5 and still no lights (ughhh). Completed all the morning chores like brushing the teeth and bathing and all in dark! This is how my first day at SVNIT was!P.S- when I mentioned food was amazing it wasn't sarcasm, the food really is awesome! This is GAJJAR BHAVAN-1st year hostel.
