I have dealt with a great number of mechanical engineers in Construction companies during my periodic visits to site from the design office.They are excellent coordinators at site.Being neutral, they can take balanced decisions, with the welfare of the project as a whole in mind and not be prejudiced by the interests of any sub-speciality group like Steel structural engineers (handling steel superstructures in Industrial buildings) , civil engineers (handling excavation, piling, foundations, and Rcc works). They may also be involved as specialists in HVAC, piping, water supply. You will find them playing an important role in Procurement, inventory of material, and also involved in Equipment erection and in interaction with the Government regarding statutory inspections and clearances.They also monitored erection progress at site and were comfortable with packages like Prima Verra etc.Even though they may not know the answers to civil engineering problems and come up with solutions, they at least understand them and appreciate them and would support the technical team and project them favourably to the super bosses.Among the engineers, Mechanical engineers are genuine “Jacks of all trades”They can fit in anywhere and I think they made good bosses after years of experience.I once asked some civil engineering colleagues how they felt having to work under a particular mechanical engineer boss at a particular large construction site.They said “He is better to work under, than an MBA or IAS or CA boss. He at least understands technical issues!”I asked the same Mechanical engineer how he felt. He told me he was lucky to have such a great technical team to work with but unlucky to be himself working under a maalik’s representative, who was not even a graduate and could only understand “man power”,”Schedule” and “Cost overruns” “Share market” “Stock prices” and had zero knowledge of technical issues.When the Mechanical engineer in weekly meetings with this super boss wanted to discuss problems, with the “maalik’s representative, he was asked to come not wtih problems but with solutions because that is what he was being paid for.GV

Why is Pakistani SSG better than Indian MARCOS?
Firstly let me assure that you that just because MARCOS has not been listed on that news article does not mean MARCOS is not worthy enough. The news magazine even ranks Pakistani SSG at number one but British SAS, US Navy SEALS, Israeli Sayeret Matkal much lower. Do you believe these rankings?Now coming to the point of existence and recognizability of the SSG Vs MARCOS. Unlike the SSG, Indian Navy MARCOS is a highly secretive unit. The actual strenght of the MARCOS is still speculated. Even the family members of the MARCOS operators do not know if the men from their family work for this unit. In many documentaries and news reports the faces of the members of this unit are masked or blurred (Ref: 26/11 press interview) Under such strict rules of concealing its existence, it is very difficult to rate an unit like the MARCOS and it is a right approach. We really do not have to tell the world what we are capable of. The bullet speaks than the press.Now coming to the Pakistani SSG. Pakistani SSG is not as secretive as the Indian MARCOS. Their efficiency was quite exposed when the SSG commandos were paradropped to a wrong location in Indian territory during the 1965 Indo-Pak war and they were surrounded by Indian farmers and finally the Indian army took them as POW's. Their adeptness was also exposed during the 1984 attempt at taking over the Siachen Glacier. That operation was led by former Pakistani dictator Gen. Pervez Musharraf who was then a Brigadier. Their team failed again at the hands of our Indian infantry units. So, I fail to understand what is so special about them. Another series of incidents which make the SSG known to the world was the training they provided to the Afghan Mujahideen during the Afghan campaign in the 1980's. This cannot be denied as Brig. Mohammed Yousaf who was one of the military controllers, admitted in his book "Afghanistan, The Bear Trap: Fall of a super power" that how SSG was used to train the Afghan Mujahideen to fight the Russians. Lastly, the SSG units participates in several SWAT Challenges along with Germany's GSG9, Austrian EKO Kobra etc. From these incidents and events you can draw a comparison that time and again Pakistani SSG has always been in the limelight through different shapes and means but the Indian Navy MARCOS has stayed true to its motto of operation and has not advertised itself at all.Hope this analysis answers your questions.
