What do you think of a death sentence for murder if the victim’s family won’t forgive the suspect?

It doesn’t matter what the family thinks or forgives. The State prosecutes for murder no matter what the victim’s family thinks and that is how it should be.The death penalty is ALWAYS wrong. This is not to say that I don’t want to see it used from time to time but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s always wrong. It’s a semantic argument to say that when the State executes someone that it is not murder but it is in fact murder. You mention a tooth for a tooth. That’s not justice — that’s revenge. I think it was Gandi who said, “The philosophy of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth leaves us a nation of blind beggars subsisting on gruel.”There is always the chance a mistake will be made and an innocent person will be executed the way Rick Perry of Texas executed an innocent man and then fired the committee appointed to investigate it and replaced them with his cronies. There is bias in prosecution and defense; there are unequal abilities that make either the defense or the prosecution better at presentation. There are juries that have their minds made up before they have heard the evidence. There’s money and political motives allowing some to be executed and others to escape “justice”.Once you have killed a man it’s too late. Even the worst criminal does not deserve death: in fact, death is actually too good for them. They should instead be punished by taking their freedom for most of his life. But “throwing away the key” is wrong too. We cannot have special geriatric prison of demented, sick, ancient prisoners who can’t even remember what they did at an enormous drain on the taxpayer dollar. No, the death penalty is always wrong. I am no different than anyone else - I want to see killers killed. But that’s my desire for revenge, not for justice.

Is the sentence, "He has captivated the attentions of a special kind of readers" grammatically correct, or should it be 'attention' instead of 'attentions' and 'special kinds of readers' instead of 'a special kind of readers'?

Well, let’s take it one piece at a time -you can ‘captivate’ people, but generally we’d say you ‘capture’ their attention.you may capture attentions, but how many ‘attentions’ does a reader have? More likely, ‘he has captured the attention’ - HOWEVER, this depends on how you, the writer, mean by your sentence. Perhaps he DID capture multiple attentions.as for ‘a special kind of readers’: as it stands, that phrase says that you are thinking of only one particular ‘kind’ of readers - a set of readers who share certain characteristics. Male teenage readers? Autistic second grade readers? Geriatric knitting readers? If you say ‘attentions’ you might want more than one ‘kind’. But if you use ‘kind’ then you probably want the singular ‘reader’ (which can certainly refer to many readers, just readers that are all that same ‘kind’).So - you choose:He has captured the attention of a special kind of reader; (followed usually at this point by a phrase describing the ‘kind of reader’ which he has captured the attention of).He has captured the attention of special kinds of readers; He has captured the attentions of a special kind of reader (a reader with several different interests, so one with plural ‘attentions’).Personally, I would go with the first choice: He has captured the attention of a special kind of reader.Or you could turn it around:Certain readers have been captivated by his writing. Many readers are captivated by his writing. His writing is captivating to many readers. There are many different ways to phrase this thought.

Will Bill Cosby serve his prison sentence in the general population?

I would not put him in General Population if it was my decision. If they have a geriatric unit with the proper medical support I might consider it if we had other celebrities such as this guy.Hi Jerry! But if it was California I would want him to kept alive. I would place him in a PHU bed. First of all his is just too medically fragile. At 81, he will need medical monitoring plus I do not think that if he is attacked he can defend himself. As a warden the last thing I would want is Cosby being attacked and killed. The death will be investigated by Corrections Admin, the Coroner, the District Attorney, State police, and even if no fault was determined the Civil Actions for wrongful death will go on for years afterwards.

Do the exhaustive appeals of a death sentence cost taxpayers more money than imprisoning the criminal for life?

The death penalty costs far more than life in prison, and the largest costs are upfront, applying whether or not a defendant is convicted, let alone sentenced to death.Back in the early 1970's, the Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty, in every state that permitted it, was applied arbitrarily and was hence, unconstitutional. That meant that factors(sometimes unpredictable and random) beyond guilt or innocence determined which convicted people were sentenced to life and which to death. Several years later, the Court ruled that newer statutes, which provided for "guided discretion," were constitutional and it allowed the death penalty to be used under these statutes. One result is that the question of guilt or innocence is not the only thing that jurors must decide. Unlike non death penalty trials, a death penalty trial involves evidence about the defendant’s entire life, character and mental health- not just the actual crime. Jurors have to predict the future dangerousness of a convicted defendant. Aggravating and mitigating circumstances must be spelled out and evaluated. What this necessarily entails:• more pre-trial time will be needed to prepare: cases typically take a year to come to trial • more pre-trial motions filed and answered • more experts will be hired  • twice as many attorneys will be appointed for the defense, and a comparable team for the prosecution • jurors must be individually quizzed on their views about the death penalty, and they are more likely to be sequestered • two trials instead of one will be conducted: one for guilt and one for punishment • the trial will be longer: a cost study at Duke University estimated that death penalty trials take 3 to 5 times longer than typical murder trialsHardly any defendant facing a possible death sentence can afford a qualified attorney, and counties must pay for them. And then, the appeals begin.

What happens to elderly people spending a life sentence in prison as far as healthcare or once they are no longer mobile?

In Britain they get good quality free health care. In some ways healthcare in prison is better than outside - prisoners can probably get a healthcare appointment more quickly than someone outside. The main difference is that prison healthcare is nurse-led so a prisoner will see a nurse who will decide whether they need to see a doctor whereas outside people get appointments with doctors with having to go through a nurse.Social care (i.e. help with dressing, eating, and so forth) is a different case. Prisoners volunteer and are trained to provide this care but these prisoners tend to progress quickly to open prisons and then early release and they are often reluctant to provide more intimate personal care. You might question why older prisoners who need social care are still held in prison. I certainly do at times. But some have committed crimes that need to be punished and some might still be dangerous if released.

What if someone was sentenced to two back-to-back life sentences and then "legally died" (heart stops) and then comes back to "life" twice? Would they be freed?

No. They would remain in prison until the sentence was up. It is important to know that life doesn’t always mean life. It can mean life, as in until you die, or life as in a certain period of time until you get paroled. Regardless, if you temporarily die, that doesn’t get you out.

What are some good replacements for using "Because" in a sentence?

I do some songwriting (not rap, although I did write a “geriatric rap” in praise of getting older some years back), so I get why “because” could be problematic rhythmically (not so sure why rhyming with “because” or “cause” would be a big issue—there are a good many rhymes for the “aws” sound). My guess is that you’re looking for some one-syllable words to make the rhythm work (although “’cause” would seem to be OK as a substitute for “because”). There are a lot of words that are used in everyday colloquial speech that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence they appear in, like “hey”, “man”, “see”, “huh”, “yeah”, “no”, “now”, etc. Some of these could be used as substitutes for “because”: “see” used to explain (example: “The moon is yellow; see, it’s made of cheese”) or words like “hey” or “man” that don’t have any significant meaning but form a bridge between the first idea and the next in the same way that a colon or semi-colon does in writing. In terms of two-syllable words or phrases that convey the same meaning as “because”, “you know”, “they say”, “I hear” could substitute for “because”: I’m sure you can think of a lot more in that line. You might want to look around for some writing classes that deal with either poetry or songwriting since you’re looking for help with rhythm and rhyme: the principles are pretty much the same; and a spoken-word performing class might also give you some ideas. Good luck!
