How can I get contacts off a Microsoft Lumia phone with a broken screen?

Windows Phones should automatically be updating your contacts to your Microsoft account. As well as backing up calendar, pictures, videos, texts and any other useful data on the device to a backup file on OneDrive. So you simply buy a new Windows Phone. When you turn it on you login to your Microsoft account. From there your basic info like contacts and calendar will sync to the phone. The next step is the phone will ask if you want to restore a backup. It also knows which applications were installed and reinstalls them from the Windows Store. It's relatively fast and painless. I've done it multiple times on purpose (upgrading to a new phone) and not so much (broken or stolen). Depending on how much data it is (I store about ten gigs online) it takes from fifteen minutes to a few hours to restore but it's like nothing happened. This is one of the things Windows Phone did right from day 1. You will never see a Windows Phone user text back “new phone, who is this?”. Or post to Facebook saying they need phone numbers resent to them.I guess the situation is different if you want to move to Android or iPhone. I assume those phones have some ability to connect to a Microsoft account, where your contacts and calendars are stored in the cloud. There are apps for OneDrive, so pictures and other data should be saved. The phone itself is a brick, discard it in an environmentally safe way.
