Need to get rid of COMPUTER!!?

If you need to destroy it completely, just throw it into a volcano.

If you're talking selling it, you could try donating it to a local charity and get a receipt for tax deduction purposes. If you sell or give it away, be sure to erase the hard drive first so nobody can recover any personal data off the computer.

How can I safely get rid of a computer that no longer works? I can’t turn it on, but I don’t want to donate it because I fear someone will have access to my files and info that I am unable to erase.

What I would suggest is taking out the hard drive. Now, this sounds scary and hard, but in most cases that aren’t relatively modern, ultraslim laptops, you can do this pretty easily. Now, if you’ve got a desktop, this will be ridiculously easy. On the back somewhere, there will be a few screws or a latch that holds in one of the panels on the side. Unscrew the screws or undo the latches(or both), then slide or pull it off. Its fine if you need to screw around with it for a bit, sometimes these are really not intuitive. Now, you should see something like this:The hard drive is the thing on the right here, with some plugs sticking out towards the bottom. All you need to do now is pull the plugs out of it, unscrew the screws on the side, and slide it out, then reassemble. If you still can’t find it, the hard drive itself looks like this:If you have a laptop, this will probably actually be easier. Most laptops that are a bit older have panels on the bottom. They look a bit like this:Now, usually these will have little icons inset in them that show you which panel allows access to which thing, with the hard drive usually having a few little circles designed to look like platters. Failing that, often the hard drive is towards the front of the laptop, so try that one first. Once you’ve figured out which panel you want to take off, unscrew it, pull it off, and if you see something along the lines of the hard drive image earlier in the answer, unplug it and take it out. If you don’t, try another panel. If you are out of panels, I’d suggest just taking it to a place you intend to donate to and asking if you can keep the hard drives. A lot of the time, they’ll take it out for you so you can’t try to sue them for allowing someone access to private data. Hope this helped!

What is the best way to get rid of/donate old computer monitor/keyboard/router?

You can get rid of them for free through craigs list or whatever you have in your area similar to it.You can ask local schools or organizations if they want them for use, to distribute to those who can’t afford one, or for hardware education instruction. Many municipalities no longer allow throwing these things in the trash. They provide collection or recycling centers where electronic equipment can be dropped off.Whatever you do, remember that you probably have confidential information on your hard drive (passwords, account numbers, credit card information) that you don’t want others to see. Even if you delete files or format the drive, the information may still be obtainable. There are utilities that are designed to securely wipe a hard drive or you can remove the drive and smash (like really break get into the middle of it and trash the spinning disk) completely to make the information irretrievable.

What old computer program is still too useful to get rid of?

Thanks for the A2A.The other two answers are both great.Yes, it depends on your definition of old. There is a lot of COBOL in financial houses and insurance houses that works and is difficult to replace. It was largely developed in the 1960s and 1970s.Almost all the UNIX utilities have been stable since the early 1970s and, whilst still being maintained, need little or no update. They are enormously useful and can handle huge text bodies that ‘normal’ text editors choke on . e.g. grep, awk, sed, find, head, tail. Emacs and vi also come to mind.In other cases, the original business users and programmers that developed the code base have all retired and died. Attempts to modernise the code fail since there is a lot of complexity, and no-one knows what the complexity achieves. The business rules are almost impossible to extract. Insurance houses with long term contracts are full of this sort of thing.Air traffic control has been difficult to modernize due to safety issues. Anywhere human safety is involved, businesses tend to stick with ‘old faithful’ code rather than run the risk of catastrophe in the modern litigious world.Back then one could argue that ‘the new, computerised mine hoist has saved 100s of lives, so one accident is still worthwhile, we fixed the bug, it won’t happen again’. Nowadays that code is stable and offers low risk.Serial protocols such as email, TCP/IP, RS422, modbus, FTP, HTTP etc have been around a long time, but are still used heavily. They are difficult to change because the huge user base relies on them.

I have a lot of old computer parts I need to get rid of, who will take them for free?

I will if you’re anywhere near Albany, NY and it’ll fit into my full-size truck.Electronics geeks often love old electronics. Things used to use more discrete components in the old days. Those components can still be removed and used. Of course, it’s only of interest to people who are hobbyists. It’s too much work if you aren’t just doing it for fun.In my case, I’m interested in old computers and would probably find a few gems in there.Finding someone like me in your area would put the old parts to good use.

How to get rid of school software on an old computer?

My grandma is a librarian in milwaukee, WI and she gave me this laptop the school was getting rid of and it still has the software to watch what your doing from another computer and that site blocking stuff and it locks me out of my account on the login screen for no reason.

If someone could help me out with this that would be great.

Thanks!

What steps should you take when getting rid of old electronics so there isn't any personal data left on them?

You cannot simply delete all files in the hard disk, because operating systems never really delete file data, they just invalidate file allocation table entries for deleted files. So, with freely available software, it is often possible to bring back deleted personal data. This holds true even formatting the entire disk. This applies to all types of storage: traditional magnetic hard disks (in desktop and portable computers), solid state drives (in desktop or portable computers) and flash memory (in tablets and smartphones). But there are many software packages that can be used to fully delete all data on disks. These apps run for a long time because they span the entire disk or memory to delete data sector by sector. After deletion the disk can then be used again, reformatting it or not.In Europe there is also a law that states that all data must be fully deleted before selling or giving away a computer (I think this is seldom done). For bigger companies that discard many computers, there is also a more effective solution (for magnetic hard disks only): the entire disk is taken out of the case and is placed in a machine that deletes all data with a very, very strong magnetic field. After this the disk becomes totally useless, it cannot even be formatted again.Another solution is to physically destroy the hard disk (opening it and taking out the magnetic disks inside) or the electronic board where solid state memory is placed (breaking the memory chips).
