HAIR WEAVES & BRAIDS: Some hairstyles, including tight braids and weaves, may increase the risk of developing an irreversible form of scarring hair loss, according to a new study in the Archives of Dermatology. Seen predominately in African-American women, this type of hair loss, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, centers on the vertex (crown) of the scalp and spreads peripherally. “Any style that causes too much tension and traction on the hair, such as braiding with artificial hair weaved in, can possibly lead to scarring hair loss,” says study author Angela Kyei, MD, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. In the study, 326 African-American women answered questionnaires about their hair-grooming methods, health status, and other demographic information. Dermatologists then performed a scalp examination to grade hair loss. Nearly 60% of the women showed signs of advanced central hair loss with scarring. The women were also more likely to have type 2 diabetes and bacterial scalp infections, and sport hair styles associated with traction, including braids and weaves, the study showed. “But hair loss is permanent, meaning that we can inject steroids or creams but it won't bring your hair back, so it’s very important to seek help with dermatologists early on,” she says. Why are those the only choices? Naturally curly or kinky hair does not always equal an afro. Natural styles come in wide variety including all sorts of braids, twists and knots that protect delicate curly hair and allow it to grow longer without excessive breakage while looking beautiful.Personally, I love whatever styles suit the individual's hair, face and head shape as well as their personality and lifestyle. I have some younger coworkers currently who can rock huge afros because they are tall, gorgeous and look like they could strut a runway during lunch with no worries. There is a tiny lady who is older on our staff, and she would look odd trying to carry such a big style. However, with her small stature and features, a shorter natural style looks good on her. One of my fellow judges just got a new style with beautifully sculpted thick braids. It looks really good with her features and longer hair past the shoulders.I decided to let my hair go completely natural in late 2016. I cut off my hair quite short in the early summer to get rid of all permanent chemicals and used only color that washed out after about 28 shampoos. Late in the year, I let that fade off as well. I stopped using styling tools like a blowdryer or heated brush too. I think that many people who had known me for years were confused by what my 100% natural hair looks like for the first time as it grows out. It is like a silver halo around the front edge. I've gotten a surprising number of compliments for allowing my hair to do its thing for more than 18 months.
As a woman, do you find afros on men attractive?
I'm extremely into afros on black guys. Not so much into the white guy fro, but I can be convinced by sufficient evidence, on a case-by-case basis.For instance: Bob Ross is one of the finest, gentlest souls who ever dwelt on this green earth. May he rest in peace.

Im half black and half hispanic and i have really curly hair.. it definitly can come across as "afro centric".. but then again im mixed so ppl are not that intimidated by it all on me.. When i straigten my hair and wave it i seem to get alot more attention from white guys then when i wear it curly. When my hair is curly i get alot of attention from black guys... =/ Reason why im asking is cause there is this super cute guy thats in one of my classes and i dont talk to him.. he sits across from me and im not sure if he likes the straight hair or curly hair.. hes pretty shy.
