What are some of the weirdest superstitions in India?

India is a very ancient and unbroken culture. During the course of time many practices assume the position of superstitions. Many a times some practices which are justified in some era becomes irrelevant later. We have lost the logic behind some practices eg Yagya and Hawan. But these cant be termed as superstitious in the absence of knowledge and our correct understanding.I consider the following two practices as most undesirable.Sati Pratha. This practice though no more in the country but has been there and took lot of effort in getting rid of.Untouchability. This superstition based on castes by and large is not practised. However may be found in some villages or areas of our vast and diversified country.Sati Pratha was a very inhuman kind of practise. But if the widow is, life long threatened of abduction and rape this may get adopted. What led it in India, I cant say but the long Muslim rule and their oppressive practices must have given more currency to it.Ref: Sati (practice) - Wikipedia, What is Untouchability?, Superstition in India - Wikipedia

What is the ugly truth of Indian myths and superstitions?

Any kind of myth or superstition is just a fact without any reason or logic.Let us take the example of Sabrimala case. Earlier, it prohibhited the entry of women from age 10 years to 50 years as this range of age is considered as the menstruation age and the priests of Sabrimala temple believed that women are considered impure throughout this age. But this is highly wrong as there are other holy shrines in India other than Sabrimala temple and there is no such prohibhition like this in those temples. The only thing which anyone expect is to not enter the temple during their menstrual cycle and women themselves are very much mature to decide when they have to enter any temple or not. Due to this many people and activitists which were against this and fought case and the desicion come in their favour that women and men should enjoy equal rights and women of all age groups should be allowed to enter the temple. So the only thing I want to convey is that before following any superstition blindly , first fetch for the logic or reason behind it because some superstition are very small and can be ignored but some like Sabrimala where a very large age group of women were banned was highly wrong.

Why are there so many non scientific superstitions in India?

I assume you're Indian? Forgive me if I’m wrong.Well my point is, every culture has many superstitions. The ones you see are the ones you personally know from being present in the area of culture.Well if I had to give a proper answer, then here is what I think. The emperors and kings of the past had a lot of treasure buried deep within secret places. And to avoid the general public from going near those places, information of harm or made-up stories - superstitions were given out.The public accepted and believed in harm being present as the king stated so.Information, if not recorded accurately, gets tampered with and eventually changes over time. The same had happened to many of those and this superstitions such as “the basement of the temple contains demons” came up.Recently under one of the temples in India, if I'm not wrong, a lot of treasure was discovered.I belive that this is also one of the sources of superstitions in India.
