What does “to flinch” mean?
“To flinch” is a verb with two meaningsto make a quick, nervous movement as an instinctive reaction to fear or pain.Remember that nasty anticipation of the slapping hand landing on the cheek? How as a school kid, your eyes would shut and your face would almost instantly jerk the other way to avoid the blow? That, right there is to flinch! (P.S. If you’ve been a good kid, I’m barking up the wrong tree! :D. Let it be an impersonal example in that case! Hahaha! )(flinch from) - to shirk from or avoid doing something out of fear or anxiety. Observe some sentences : A soldier never flinches from war duty. Due to a violent past, he never flinches from a physical fight. “I have never flinched from telling the truth, even if doing so means the end of my career and reputation.”
Why is it that sometimes when I urinate I get the shivers?
There's already a detailed answer. So, I'd be as brief as I can. Thanks for the A2A. :)More often than not the shiver or trembling the body goes through during or after peeing occurs after you have held on to the urine for quite a long time before finally releasing it. The shiver normally occurs after urination or moments before the urination ends. The shiver starts in the spine and rapidly moves all over the body, causing the entire body to shudder briefly.Below are some of the reasons why a person might shake after urinating:According to doctors, one of the likely reasons is because the body’s temperature quickly gets lowered after we have released enormous amounts of warm fluids from the body in the form of urine. As a result of this, the body’s protective mechanism quickly causes the body to shiver in order to bring some warmth back to the body. This is the same thing that happens to the body when we are very cold – the body begins to shiver in order to bring some heat back to the body.Another reason some people might experience pee shakes is likely because of a simple thing such as the fact that when a person wants to urinate, they expose their private parts to the cold air outside. As a result of this, the person naturally feels cold and shivers during or after urination. Also because of something called the shiver reflex. Our parasympathetic system tends to simultaneously lower blood pressure while initiating the bladder contraction (sacrum plexus). Hence in order to counter that, our sympathetic system initiates a shiver reflex to counter this drop. Men tend to experience it more since blood pressure is higher when standing and hence the drop will be significant.( hope I have not offended you. Great answer btw!)
Why do some people get disturbed on watching even a minor violent scene (showing blood and all) in movies or in real life?
For me it isn't the blood that bothers me, it is the violence.I suppose in some ways it is due to being a victim of extremely unpredictable violence growing up that I just have no stomach for imitation violence. I survived the real thing, I don't find the concept entertaining. The things on the screen are made to make you feel or think things that are suppose to simulate that fear/excitement reaction in your brain. My brain doesn't need anymore stimulation in that area. When it come to horror or thriller movies, There are people out there that do like to torture people. The images expressed in film seem to pull me away from the story and make me think of real things that the movie might be based on. Even the extreme end, where it seems ridiculous, can feel overwhelming, The movie Kill Bill, is one where I have a very mixed reaction, a lot of the violence is very over the top, but some of it is very on mark. Enough the movie where Jennifer Lopez plays a domestic violence victim who gets revenge on her spouse, Left me feeling extreme anger, and in its own way emotionally exhausted. No country for old Men, was just not my cup of tea. I also have issues with movies that create life/reality paradoxes, like 12 monkeys, The Road.. the list goes on.I have had to explain it to my husband several times; I know my grip on reality isn't solid, and it seems things that make me over think the reality around me makes me really paranoid, anxious, scared. I then have to try and convince myself that everything is okay, and that the really weird stuff I am thinking, feeling, seeing isn't there. Which can be very difficult at say 3 am, when you need to go to sleep and be up for work in a few hours. TL/DR: Life experiences make things not entertaining if you have had to live through traumatic stuff.
I suffer from obsessive thoughts. I constantly relive and examine past social interactions. I end up feeling extremely embarrassed about the situation my mind fixates on. How can I stop this?
