Giving My Gerbils Egg Cartons

Fun things for gerbils~?

Hi! Here are some things your gerbils should love. Mine sure does. They are all inexpensive and all very safe for them too.
PVC tubes, especially the corner, curvy connector pieces (can buy them at any hardware store) - My gerbils loves them. The great thing about them is:
-Can't chew them, (so they are safe for him),
-They are are cheap,
- You can connect them together to form any shape you like
- They are easy to clean

Egg Cartons, My gerbil loves to chew and demolish them. Just tare the top off (the part with writing/ink on it) and your gerbils will love them. They are also safer than some toilet paper rolls because there is No glue.

Toilet PAPER, Not the roll, but they actual paper. Just put a bunch in the cage and your gerbils will love it. They will shred it and put it in a huge pile and then make a nice bed out of it. (They prefer the softer kind.)

Along with these things, give them lots of play time out of the cage (let them crawl on your arm, etc.) A wire playpen (make sure the wire spacing if NO larger than 1/2 inch) is also great. Just make sure to keep an eye on them while they are in it because they are great escape artists.

Anyways, hope that answers your question. Fell free to email me if you have any other questions about gerbils.

Gerbils......?

10 gallons is okay, but not the best. I would recommend a 15-20 gallon tank for a pair. If you can't switch tanks, I would recommend a tank topper. I have one, and I really like it. However, it depends on the gerbils who are housed in one.

Some gerbils are huge bar chewers. One of mine will chew on the bars if I don't correct her. Some also choose to pee over the side of the tank from the edge of the topper, and that can cause a mess. My girls have done that a few times and it's not a good thing. It's also a pain to have to take the whole tank topper off to reach the gerbils in the tank. It's not a huge deal though, and it's very easy to take off and put back on.

Here's the topper I use, and I highly recommend it. It's made of wire. The only plastic is the door guards, and my girls have never chewed on those. Plastic should be avoided because it can and will be chewed. If ingested, it could cause a blockage and such. However, the wire is pretty big, so I would recommend you get a straw mat and some cardboard to put in it so your gerbils have a solid place to sit.

I have the 10 gallon tank topper 11" tall. There is a larger one for a 10 gallon tank which gives much more room.

Cardboard boxes and toilet paper/paper towel rolls! They're the best toys you can give them. My mom works at a restaurant, so she asked the employees to save paper towel rolls for her just so she can bring them home for my gerbils. They're great! I always have some handy, and they're free! You can also use Chubes from the pet store. However, toss the fluffy bedding it comes with. It can be dangerous. Most wooden toys are safe. My girls have a build n bites that they love to gnaw on. Another good choice is a nut knot nibbler.

I researched them for at least a month before I got them, so I've learned a lot. I've also spoken to some breeders and other gerbil owners. If you'd like more information or have any specific questions, feel free to e-mail me. I'd be glad to help you out.

When the momma gerbil serves the daddy gerbil papers for child support she may be preparing to give birth.Gerbils tend to give birth at night or early morning. Momma gerbil will appear calm and may do some stretching. She is very active in her own delivery and may even reach down to pull on her own placenta to help the baby be born.Allow Mom and baby to stay together until it’s brothers and sisters arrive. It takes approximately 1–2 hours for her to deliver her babies. She cuts her own umbilical cord and eat the placenta. The more babies she has the smaller their size will be. She will lick and clean baby until they give a squeak. She’ll also eat her stillborn.Leave the new family alone for the next 2–3 weeks, allow daddy gerbil to help with caring for the babies. They know what they are doing and we do not.Your gerbil can easily get pregnant again after the first 24 hours of birth. This is when she is most fertile.Good luck. :)

Chew cardboard, egg cartons (no glue), I put fire logs (from a tree) inside their cage. Most of all, they love to dig tunnels. So you put a lot more sawdust than you would with a hamster, a lot more. I used 3x the height of the gerbil. Then I put planks and logs in there and they dig tunnels under, over and everywhere. They love to be busy all day. They have to chew else they get tooth through their upper jaw or infection.I am not sure yet if they love to be inside a hamster ball and run on the floor, they do seem to enjoy it, of course one animal per ball.

Is the ink on boxes safe for gerbils?

I was wondering if the ink on cerial boxes, cigeret carton, ect. are safe for gerbils to chew on. Is the ink on egg cartons safe too? Is computer paper safe for them to chew? Any other ideas of stuff for them to chew?

Also, I'm looking for some good home made toys for gerbils. I know you can use toilet paper rolls, but is there anything else i can make?
A LOT OF IDEAS PLEASE!

Thanks!

Is it safe 2 let hamsters chew egg cartons?

My hamster, Boo, loves playing with her toilet paper tube. I'll spas it up by wrapping some hay/grass around it, too. Does your hamster's cage have a lid to it? Try tying a thin rope, or a thick string on the top of the cage, and let it hang down so your hamster can play on it. Sometimes, I tied knots in it, or even sting grapes & bananas threw it. She loves to swing on it to get the fruit, and they keep her busy. Or, I'll make a simple hamster hammock out of a little cloth & some twine.

Anyone have a gerbil?

Not sure what cage/tank you have, but I suggest getting a glass tank with a mesh lid - (at LEAST 20 gallons long or/and tall). I have two gerbils in a glass tank 2ft long, 1ft wide and 1.8ft tall :) They love it. They even have some glass shelves.

You need to get good bedding. Woodshavings; avoid cedar and pine wood. ONLY aspen is good for them :)
Other beddings; Carefresh is really good, timothy hay is good for their tunnels, you could use paper/toilet paper - MUST BE UNSCENTED AND HAVE NO INK.
Make sure you have a lot of bedding, they need to burrow and usually create a system of tubes and nests underground :)

Toys? Gerbils love cardboard, so toilet rolls are great. Try to avoid cardboard with ink on - you COULD use egg cartons, but these risk your gerbil getting salmonella, so I avoid these. You can get thick, strong tubes from petsahome that they love :) Cause their teeth always grow, they need chews. I got loofah chews from petsathome and they loved them.

Others? I got my gerbils a little wooden house - make sure they are suitable for gerbils before buying (check box). I got a suction water bottle so it sticks to my tank and a cute little polka dot food bowl for just £1!

You need to let them bathe now and again. You also need to have 'playtime'. This means taking your gerbil out of the cage and into another, secure area. (I use my bathtub, I put towels down - make sure they dont chew these) and then place some toys and a hiding place for them. Dont forget to bring food in case they get hungry. For their bath, during playtime have a bowl with some chincilla dust in, they will clean themselves.

You MUST get a friend for your gerbil. They need someone else, but, you will have to doo the split tank method, otherwise they might kill each other. I brought my gerbils together, but loads of people do the split tank method and it works really well :)

You stick them on the wall to help the acoustics in the room for music listening or playing. The egg shaped holes in the cartons cause sound waves to come back out the same way they went in, thereby cancelling themselves out and preventing them from reverberating around the room. This method won’t stop bass sounds from passing into the next room because bass goes through just about everything.

How do you make homemade gerbil toys?

I think my gerbil is bored. He usually sleeps the most of the day (and night) and his wheel broke. I will be going to the pet store next week to buy one. So does anyone know how or what to make homemade gerbil toys. Please don't say toilet paper tubes or paper towel rolls because I ran out of them. No rude comments!

Homemade gerbil toys?

o try toilet paper/paper towel rolls-wad up some paper towel, and paper and watch them shred it to peices.

o wooden popcicle sticks-they love to chew them up

o strips of paper-gerbils love to chew theses up and make beds

o hanging toilet/paper towel roll- tie it up with string and watch them play for hours

o Empty cereal boxes-they like to make beds and nests inside of them.

o broken jar or ceramic jar-if there is a piece missing, you could use it as a home for them. (just make sure that the edges are smooth)

o cans-glue three cans ontop of one another like a pyramid. They can play in or under them.

hope it helped =]
