Agents sometimes have access to airline fares that the general public does not because consolidators purchase blocks from airlines (and hotels and car rental suppliers) at a discount guaranteeing the airline, hotel or car rental company a minimum amount of business.  Then those consolidators sell through travel agents at a discounted cost and everyone ends up with a great deal.  Large online search engines do the same thing but instead of passing on the savings to their customers, they often charge the same price as the airline's price to the consumer and pocket the entire difference.  That is just one of the reasons that using a travel agent is beneficial to the entire system, suppliers and customers alike.

Why is air travel such an unpleasant experience? What would you say are the three worst things about it?

It didn’t used to be unpleasant. When I was a youngster in my 20s, air travel was a pretty nice way to travel. Fares were cheap, the cabin crew were charming, they served actual meals and, for those who indulged, you could smoke. There were so many airlines to pick from that they competed against each other to be the most attractive airline, luring travellers with good food, movies, and free booze and you could check more than a single bag, regardless the size or weight.Today…I’d rather drive or even walk. Fares are simply usurious, cabin crews are as likely to be surly as not, the only meals served are on overseas flights (unless you want to spend $10 on a limp croissant with mystery meat), smoking will get you arrested, free booze is a distant memory and if you check more than one modest bag, you’ll have to pay another outrageous fee to do so; some airlines charge for any bag checked through. Airports are like concentration camps and everyone you see is tense, stressed and in a foul mood, and cops strolling around with automatic weapons is just a bit off-putting.My three favorite things to hate (and the reasons I refuse to fly) are: 1. TSA, top of the list. They are rude, imperious, incompetent and filled with a nausea-inducing sense of self-importance. 2. Costs. Flying anywhere is obscenely expensive. 3. Sour crews. Virtually every crewmember I’ve spoken with in the past 25 years has been worked half to death and have an attitude like Godzilla. If I want to have my a** chewed on, I’ll go to the dog pound.
