Are columbia's parkas good enough for Canada winter?
I live in Montreal.I have an old Columbia Interchangeable jacket (about 8 years old) and to be honest it's been quite good for years. Most winter days I can wear a tshirt underneath and if the temperature drops to -30 celsius I add a long sleeve fleece vest and I'm all set (I did so and went skying at -35celsius at Bromont). What's most important in a winter jacket is its capacity to keep a layer of air between your skin and the fabric, there are many ways to achieve that. You can go by simply isolating a jacket or you can go the interchangeable way. Interchangeables are great in that aspect because by having a shell and a liner you effectively have one layer of air between them. If you add a fleece vest (because of the fabric texture) you add one more fine layer of air on top of the one provided by the liner itself... Also what's nice about interchangeable is that you can adjust you isolation level depending on how cold it is outside... Now I'm also looking to buy the Men's Powder Bowl Parka but the model found at SportExperts and Atmosphere for example are not the same as on Columbia's website... If somebody can tell me where to get one please let me know! Second runner up for me would be the Carabineer II Parka which makes use of goosedown to insulate the liner which is fantastic! But that jacket shell is not equipped with omniheat which is a also a desirable feature.
