Good Price For Sheet Music Transcription

Is there any web service to transcribe YouTube song to sheet music?

For transcribing instrumental covers there is a web service called Melody Scanner. It currently works best for piano music and the results for guitar are getting better and better. You can even edit the music online and correct misdetected notes directly. The resulting sheet music can also be downloaded as pdf or musicxml/midi.

Can anyone transcribe a song for me into piano sheet music?

I wish I could do it for you, but I don't have time.
I've gone to websites where they have a lot of free transcribed music and people that are willing to transcribe songs that you give them. Here is a link to one. http://www.angelfire.com/music/crescalona/sheetmusic.htm

There are other sites out there as well. Putting this question up might find you someone who can! Good luck!

How much should I charge for music transcription by ear?

I'm working on the transcription of 3 pieces by commission. I listen to the music and I write it down. I have done this before, but just for personal use. I have never been paid for doing it, so I really don't know how much I should charge for it. The person who will pay me for it says he might ask for more music once I'm done with these first pieces, so I don't want the price to be so low that I'd be giving away my work too cheap or so high that I could lose my client.

Has anyone else done this kind of work?

How do music transcribers determine the price they sell their transcriptions for?

Some charge by the page. I have friends who charge by the note. I *think* they charge between 15 to 25 cents per note. I beleive it depends on whether they are transcribing by ear or engraving from existing scores.

If I made a transcription of a song, how much money would go to copyright holders?

(I assume you are in the United States.)If you want to publish sheet music of a song, you’ll need the permission of the songwriter or music publisher. I’m not totally sure why the songwriter/publisher would want to give you permission to publish your transcribed sheet music that approximates their song, when they already have the correct sheet music on hand and can publish it if they want to. But, who knows, if you’re offering them money, maybe they’ll go for it. In any event, in general you’ll have to negotiate with the songwriter/publisher before you can legally publish sheet music of the song. (You don’t need permission from the band or record label that made the recording in the movie soundtrack.)If you want to release a cover of a song (a recording of you singing or playing the song, very similar to an existing version), that’s a lot easier. You can just go to Songfile, a rights clearinghouse for music publishers, pay 9.1 cents per copy, and you’re good to go. This is essentially a statutory license that the songwriter must, by law, give you. (You still don’t need permission from the band or record label that made the recording in the movie soundtrack.)If you want to perform your version of the song for profit (like, sing it at a nightclub, or have a concert where you charge for admission), either you or the performance venue needs a license from a performing rights society that represents the songwriter and publisher. (The three major societies are ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC.) These licenses are really easy to get, in that the organizations are happy to take your money, but it does cost money. (You still don’t need permission from the band or record label that made the recording in the movie soundtrack.)
