Good Sat Books To Learn From Home

How can I prepare for the SAT while being at home?

I studied the SAT at home, and scored in the 99th percentile! For this plan to work, you should start studying 3 months before the actual exam.Okay, first things first:1. Click here Khan Academy, click on “Start practicing”, sign up/login, and do the first practice test. This is going to be a diagnostic test for you, so you can know where you are placed in the score spectrum.2. Navigate to the practice section, and start practicing individual skills.3. At the same time, invest your money in a two, very nice books that will help you a lot on the SAT.They are:1. Barron's NEW SAT, 28th edition (For a general good grasp on the SAT. It tutors everything in detail.2. The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar, 3rd edition (Excellent for the redesigned writing section)For reading, I personally don't think much can be done. Sure you can read The Ultimate Guide for SAT Reading, 2nd edition, or learn some general tips by reading these articles that will give you a boost:Top 10 New SAT Reading TipsThe New SAT Reading Literature Passage - Magoosh High School BlogNew SAT Reading: The Nonfiction Passages - Magoosh High School BlogBut in general, your reading score heavily depends on how much you have… well… read :) If you don’t have a minimum reading habit, chances are you won’t improve much. What you can do is read at least an article a day till the actual test. I would recommend:Science News, Articles, and Information - The Scientific AmericanWorld Edition - The AtlanticBreaking News, World News & Multimedia - The New York TimesThe Economist - World News, Politics, Economics, Business & Finance - The EconomistPractice whenever you have free time.Besides the 6 practice tests on Khan Academy and the 7th and 8th official practice tests on Collegeboard’s website at SAT Practice Tests, look for practice tests online.Definitely check out Prepscholar and their awesomely helpful articles like this one: SAT Punctuation: Tips for Commas, Colons, and Dashes which is a guide to basically every single punctuation rule on the SAT. You can boost around 50 points overall if you learn these bad boys well. And yep, that is pretty much it!At least that’s what I did and got this email one fine day:Good Luck!

Which books should I refer for the preparation of the SAT?

A lot of these answers are wrong and I hope that some people don’t take their advice because you will waste time practicing with some books. To clarify, I did not score high on the SAT (relative to someone who might have a higher score and is answering this question) . I got a 1380: 720 Math and 660 R/W. Writing: 40/44 right. Reading: 31/52 (Yes. I know. Terrible). Math: 51/58.This is what I learned.ELIMINATE THESE BOOKSBarronsKaplanPrinceton (This is your LASSSSTTTTTT resort if you finish the books I am about to suggest. The rest are trash)McGrawhillSAT for dummiesAnd basically everything else besides:The Official College Board BookSAT black bookErica Meltzer’s booksTutorverse 1550+PWN the SAT math guideCollege Panda booksThese books are the best. The Tutorverse is best for math, Erica Meltzer is good for reading and writing.Websites:UWorld - #1 Test Prep for USMLE, ABIM, ABFM, NCLEX, SAT, ACT & MCATKhan AcademyThese are books compiled from my 4 month journey reading Subreddits and asking students who scored 1500’s how they studied.Avoid the books I mentioned at ALL costs because the SAT has questions designed a specific way and those books do not imitate that.Edit: I had potential to score higher on the SAT but all my studying was done 2 weeks prior to the exam. DO NOT WAIT LAST MINUTE.

Princeton Review SAT books vs. Barron's guide?

During my four years of high school, I bought many many review books. I bought a Princeton Review for practically ever Advanced Placement class I took.

This is the way I see both review books:
Princeton Review always gives you an advantage just because it's made by the makers of the SAT. I actually bought one of these and it was very helpful. The review book gave me enough Math practice and like 8 actual-length SAT practice tests. The questions were extremely similar to the ones I encountered on the SAT. Not only that, but the vocabulary from the Critical Reading section was also on the SAT. For review books in different subjects (like AP European History and so on), Princeton Review offers a more summarized explanation of the topics and the questions are always very very similar to the ones on the tests.

All the Barron's guides I have encountered always have harder questions than the actual tests. I would say the following...if for example, you have trouble with Math...get an SAT Math Workbook from Barron's. Since they have harder questions than the SAT, these will help you get in shape for the test.

I say get the Princeton Review book. It's from the college board and they're the ones that make the test, so go for that one. The thick, big, blue book.

What is the best way to prepare for the SAT?

Okay first of all , the PR course is good ONLY if your score is really low . I got 1440 on my first time SAT and then I signed up for PR course (( Only English , Cuz I got 650 on Math and I didn't need the math course )) , for increasing Writing score, PR is really REALLY good . However it's not that useful for reading , and I don't know about Math since I didn't take it .
BTW note that iam international (( non-native English speaker )) , so maybe there is a difference between you and me .

Secondelly , the best way to prepare is to take as much practice tests as you can and know your mistakes after you finish .
After taking about 12 practice tests (( and the course also )) my score went up from 1440 to 2060 last time I checked (( and this is according to the college board book practice tests ))

About the books, you DEFENITLLY NEED to get the blue book , the tests in there are just like the real thing.
I don't know about PR cracking the SAT 2012 , but when I took the course they gave me PR 11 practice tests for SAT and PSAT book and it's really good . It's a bit harder than the real thing however (( I'm getting 1940 in the PR 11 practice tests and 2060 in the college board book ))

Another book that is really good but really REALLY HARDER than the real thing is Barron's , as I said it's really really harder and really over prepares you .

One more thing , one mistake that i'm doing is that I'm never memorizing vocab , and I omit all the sentence completion questions on the test . Don't do that , right now my score in CR in 570 and I know I could get 650 at least if I memorized some vocab (( BTW Barron's has a 3500 vocab words lest that is really helpful , if you master it then you will master the CR on the SAT ))

I hope I helped (:

Gd luck

How do you get a GREAT score on the PSAT?

Okay. This coming October is when i will be taking my PSAT. My school sent home a letter stating all of the tests the juniors will be taking, what they are, etc. etc. Well on one part it says that if you score in the 1/2% of 1% you are able to get HUGE, almost fully paid scholarships. I really need the scholarships to get into college. I'm a straight "A" student and am very studious. I will take all of the time needed to get a good grade on this (or any) exam. Please, i need your help. Are there any good study guides/book i can purchase? What about free online practice sites? I'm already enrolled in a few but im really intent on doing excellent on this test. I know its a hard thing to do but one boy just did it last year. He got a $44,000 scholarship so please, lend me your thoughts and help me study my tail off!! Thanks so much [in advance]!
