Good Ways To Learn French

How can i learn french fast?

First you need to decide how much French you want to learn. Then you have to commit to it and persevere.

As the author at the website http://www.how-to-learn-any-language.com says, learning a language to fluency is absolutely possible and I agree. One of the first challenges you'll meet is thinking that learning a language to fluency is impossible, or being told this by someone else. Don't let this be - http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/e/faq/basics-impossible.html. Again following the advice of the website author (who is an accomplished language learner), using a grammar book before getting to a higher level of learning may just be a waste of your time.

If you want to be able to reach a conversationally fluent level, I think your best bets are on the FSI courses, which are free. These courses were developed by the US Department of State decades ago for US Diplomats. It remains perhaps the most efficient (and most serious) way to learn a language. While you don't need to live in the country or even have a teacher /friend who speaks that to practice with, of course it would help.

The course focuses on ORAL skills almost entirely and has many, many hours of recorded audio by native speakers - I think about 18 hours in Units 1-12 and more from units 13-24. If you wish to become fluent in a language, going to a workbook and filling in blank spaces isn't going to do you any good.

Also and this is important for your pronunciation - When you are starting off do not try to pronounce a word just by looking at it especially if it is French because French orthography is very difficult. Just as importantly, never ever ever ever try to translate a French sentence word by word into English or vice versa. There is a French equivalent of the meaning, and there is an English equivalent meaning. A word that exists in the sentence in English may not even be in the French equivalent.

Best way to learn french?

Hi Hugo,

The best way to learn french would probably be to go to a french speaking country. That is the simple answer to your question. However, I realize it may not always be possible to travel to a french speaking country, but no fret, with the help of the internet and today's technology, you can pretty much bring the french speaking countries right to you.

There are lots of tools, websites, and courses out there on the web, many of them free and great, which will help you in your quest to learn french. The only problem is that you can get bombarded with so much information from so many different resources that it can leave you feeling overwhelmed and not knowing where to begin.

I would recommend you check out www.rapid-french.com, they have all the material you could possibly want or need, and they put it all together really nicely. They offer a free course which is absolutely great, I highly recommend it. It's got all the stuff you would get anywhere else, but it's all in one place and organized really nicely.

They have audio lessons with french/english transcriptions which are really awesome, games, french culture lessons (which are cool because they tie in the culture to learning the language, makes it more fun in my view and helps you understand the language better), and some really neat little tools, like one which helps you with your pronunciation (i'll let you explore that on your own). They also have a great online community where you can meet other students and native french speakers and instructors.

What is the best way to learn French numbers?

The French used to count in 8's
so you know 1 to 8 and 9 is neuf - which means new!
2 x 8 are sixteen so you learn 11 to 16 .... but then you have 10 and 7, 10 and 8, 10 and 9

All you need after that is 20, 30, 40 50 and 60 and remember that 21, 31, 41 and 51 all have "et" and the rest don't.

Hope that helps

You might find it helpful to learn 2, 12 and 20, 3, 13 and 30 etc. There is a close relationship in the words

Best way to learn French vocabulary?

Hmm, this depends on your current level. I'll assume that you don't have the opportunity to meet with a native French speaker... I'd recommend the following:

Watching French films

Listening to French music

Reading French articles on subjects that interest you (eg sport)

Change your phone, facebook, email, video games etc. language to French. This is a great way to learn specialist vocab i.e. Inbox, Drafts etc

Buy (or borrow from a library, most library's have a foreign language section tucked away in some corner!) a few French children's books.

Using the above, you'll not only improve your French in a more entertaining way, you'll also learn about French culture at the same time. Your French will also sound more natural.

If you want some film/book/song titles feel free to drop me an email. Bonne chance !
