Google Science Fair Ideas 2014

Google Science Fair ideas?

I'm a ninth grader and I take AP Bio.I have a really high understanding of biology and wanted to start my own research project which I would like to enter in the 2014 Google Science Fair.
I had some thoughts on what to do:
Testing endosymbiotic theory

What can inhibit S phase in cancerous cells?

Is there a way to tell if S phase has gone on too long?

I really want to do something in cancer research or evolutionary biology?
Any thoughts or other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

What is the Google Science Fair like?

I was a global finalist in the 2014 Google Science Fair. Attending the finals was extremely exciting and rewarding, and I formed friendships with people whom I still talk to today. The finals involved being put up in a nice hotel and getting to know the other finalists. Having participated in other science fairs like Siemens, Intel STS, and ISEF, I would say the main defining characteristic of GSF is the emphasis on collaboration. Not only did we get to meet the other finalists and learn about their projects, we got to bond with them and become close friends with one another. We also got to meet the judges informally before judging began, which allowed me to become Facebook friends and connect with them. The fair was overall pretty low-stress. You get a lot of cool materials to set up your booth, and you get a lot of time to practice. Google also makes a point to show you around the area as well as the campus. In between the different rounds, we would play video games with each other or hear from the researchers at Google on what they’re working on. More than judging, the public component was tiring. Press come around to your booth and ask to take pictures and/or hear about your project. It lasts for many hours, and you’re standing the whole time. They try to alleviate stress by letting you take breaks and eat snacks though.I firmly believe that among all the science fairs I did, GSF was the most rewarding. I formed lasting connections and it expelled that competitive atmosphere that can often suck the fun and excitement out of presenting your research. I highly recommend anyone to apply to GSF, because the experience is once in a lifetime.

What type of initiation or study would make it far in the Google Science Fair?

Check out the Judging Criteria on the GSF website here: Participants - Google Science Fair 2014Produce a project that scores highly in each of those areas and you'll go a long way. Also, keep in mind the competition tagline - "It's your turn to change the world". Any project with the potential for doing just that is likely to progress far.Use the Ideas Springboard at Google Science Fair 2014 Idea Springboard to give you some inspiration!

What are some interesting high school science fare project ideas?

These science fairs typically assess submissions on two criteria:-Relevance of the project to societyEffectiveness of the projectI would start by identifying an area which I find interesting. A science concept which I find attractive, and then look out for its applications.Other approach might be, to pick a problem / issue bothering society / community / country (examples may be waste management, pollution, environment protection, alternative energy, energy storage, etc.) and then design a solution / model / project which can demonstrate your creativity, understanding and application of a science concept to tackle the identified challenge.I would also look for previous submissions to competitions like Google Science Fair, INSPIRE itself, and check out website like ProjectsforSchool (Shop science projects for School kids | Projectsforschool.com) which list working models of science.Wishing you all the best for your project!!

What are some interesting international competitions like Google Science Fair?

If you're interested in international competitions where you present your own science project (like in Google Science Fair), your best bet would be Intel's International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). In both fairs, you conduct your own science research and present your findings. In ISEF, unlike Google Science Fair, students present their work directly to judges starting at the regional level. At each level, students will be chosen to move to the  next level, eventually reaching the international fair, which is held in an US city that changes from year to year. Over 1000 students convene at the international fair annually to present their incredible science research. 10/10 would recommend.

School makes me feel like a slave?

I know a lot of kids hate school, but I genuinely despise it. It's no longer about learning, simply retaining information to do well for standardized tests. Just the idea of having to ask permission to go to the bathroom when my body tells me I need to makes me sick. I feel like I'm being brainwashed everyday. I would have five times the knowledge I have now, if I were able to explore and actually experience life, rather than sit at a disk every day of my life. I think the education system is unfair and unjust. No two people are the same, yet every kid is expected to excel in every subject? Only so you can be accepted by colleges that rob you of your money for some frat parties and a piece of paper that tells your employer that you paid for a piece of paper. I want to learn about things I am interested in, and express my talents. I envy the people who don't mind school and choose to dedicate all of their time to it but my god I just can't! I think I'm just using this as a means to vent, but does anyone understand? Can anyone enlighten me? All I want to do is fight the system and find a way out but obviously theres no hope in that so is there anything I can do to become motivated to do well in school if I have no respect for the education system?
