How is the word "on" grammatically different to the word "onto"?

Both on and onto are prepositions, and both of them refer to the positional relation between one thing and another, where the second thing has a two-dimensional geometry. (Think about in a box, on a plane, on a line, and at a point.) But there the similarities end.The differences between on and onto are both grammatical and semantic. As for the grammatical difference, on can follow a transitive verb, an intransitive verb, or a linking verb. (He put it on the table; it lay on the table; it was on the table.) But onto is much less likely to follow an intransitive verb and is highly unlikely to follow a linking verb. What’s really interesting is the semantic difference, which in fact probably explains the grammatical distribution. Onto denotes motion (from the first thing toward the second thing) while on simply denotes position. As a result, on is more natural in statements that describe a thing at rest, while onto comes into play in statements describing a force and its impact. Even in those relatively rare cases where an intransitive verb precedes onto, it will denote some kind of motion (like the verb fall). And verbs denoting a lot of motion or force are more likely to use onto compared to verbs that denotes only a little motion or force. Thus, you might say that you placed your cup gently on the table, or you hurled your cup angrily onto the floor. To illustrate, I’ve got some data (source: Google Ngram Viewer) showing that the phrases dropped it onto and threw it onto are statistically more common than set it onto and placed it onto. Conversely, set it on and placed it on are more common than dropped it on and threw it on.Source: Google Ngram ViewerGoogle Ngram Viewer

How can you drop a raw egg onto a concrete floor without cracking the egg?

Dropping the egg from 1/4 of an inch will cause no cracks on the surface. Also, you may provide enough layers of padding to the egg to avoid any crack.Another method is dipping in vinegar for a good 2 days. This makes the calcium carbonate of the egg shell flexible and makes the egg immune to shock induced cracking.

A rock is dropped from 576 ft. In t seconds, it drops a distance of s = 16t^2 ft. Instantaneous velocity?

A rock is dropped from 576 ft. In t seconds, it drops a distance of s = 16t^2 ft. What's the instantaneous velocity of the rock when it hits the ground?

Now, I'm a little confused here. I know that you basically find the derivative, which I've calculated to be 32t. Now what I'm questioning is whether the instantaneous velocity is 0 ft/sec or 192 ft/sec.

Thanks in advance. Any explanation would be very appreciated.

Why does my cat pick up dry food from bowl, drop it on floor, then eat it?

Your cat, like many animals, is probably a bit suspicious about the bowl. He may think the food is somewhat contained inside, and not totally up for grabs, so he takes it out to where he thinks it's natural and appropriate, just to be safe. Try using a shallow plate, see if there's a diference.

What is the meaning of the phrase "Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen" ? Thank you.?

I believe it's rather a phrase. Maybe the context will help : "You asked me for a glass of water and I said I'm not a waiter. And you said sorry.
And I said, listen, why don't we quit the
grinnin' and drop the linen?"

Which sentence is correct. ENGLISH GRAMMAR.?

A is correct IF you're comparing the action of falling leaf to yellow rain drops (and IF "drops" is a noun, which I assume it isn't because it would be written "raindrops"). "Like" is followed by phrases (groups of words that don't have both a subject and a predicate).

B is correct IF you're describing the leaf falling while it is raining (and IF "drops" is a verb). "As" is followed by clauses (groups of words that do contain both a subject and predicate).
