Graphic Design Career

Graphic design as a career?

I'm currently in year 11.
I'd love a career in graphic design, but through research, it's put me off to hear about the field being so saturated... I want a job which will be stable and provide plenty of money- I understand that with graphic design this depends on experience, since it's so competitive.
I don't really know what else I'd be interested in - I love art and design. I've looked at some other art and design careers, but none of them are particularly interesting to me.

I'm planning on studying Graphic Design, Art, Computing and Geography at A-Level, and continuing with graphic design at Uni, to eventually earn a masters degree.

I've also read that there's massive demand for British designers abroad, which is great considering if love to move to the US at some point.

I'm very talented at drawing, and I'm also very experienced with Photoshop - never learned how to use it at school, just taught myself at home.

Basically, I'd like some more information on the field and advice.

Is graphic design a hard career to get into?

You have to have a lot of technical skills in your bag in order to do well with a career in graphic design. You need to know how to use multiple different types of software like photoshop, SAI, painter, and Illustrator, to name a few. On top of that, you also have to be aware of many things: current trends (what sells, etc), color theory and so on. A graphic designer not only needs the artistic skill but also the know-how of the business in order to succeed.

And everything is "hard" to get into. Getting in a good career like graphic design, web design, illustration and animation, they all take skill and hard work, not to mention you need the drive to succeed in order to do well in any of them.

How do I get started in a graphic design career?

So by being a Front End Dev you had your first interaction with graphic design.I suggest you start a LinkedIn Learning(formerly lynda.com) account and start learning Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Deke McLelland has extensive tutorials on both software. After you master the basics (a week or a month, depending on how much time you can invest in this) I recommend you start doing little by little the tutorials that you see. You can find great tutorials on youtube, I recommend Phlearn for photoshop, or on other platforms like udemy, skillshare, coursera, etc. After that start deconstructing the fee stuff that you can get your hands on to understand how it was made. After a few times patterns will start to emerge, workflows, and sooner than you think you will be a graphic designer.the question now is are you learning this just for fun or do you want to pursue a career?Let me know if you have any other questions.Best of luck,Florin

How do I grow in my career as a Graphic designer?

Are you looking to start in the corporate world, or freelance? For the corporate world:Get out there and get working - any way you can.Take on entry-level work and/or internships.Get a foot in the door and be prepared to work your butt off, even in non-graphics roles within the company to show you are a team player.Don’t be a 9-to-5′er — be ready and willing to stay late and take work home with you.For freelance: Network, network, network.Visit local BNI: Business Network International | Business Networking chapters in your area to find the best fit for your personality.Pros: They only allow one member from any business category, so if you find a good, productive group that you mesh well with, you could potentially be the only graphic designer they feed leads to.Cons: It’s a big commitment — financially and time wise (annual fee, weekly meal costs, plus required attendance at weekly meetings)BNI is all about building relationships, and the payoff can be big if you make the effort. Plus, it beats the heck out of cold-calling!(Note: I’m not affiliated with the BNI organization, I’m just one its success stories. I was a member of a great group for 5 years which was integral in building my business when I started as a freelancer. I never had to advertise and I built a solid business attributed greatly to relationships I built there — plus, I ended up with lifelong friends I made there.)

Is it too late to start a career in graphic design at 25?

I'm sure that by now it is already abundantly clear to you that, no it is not too late to start a career in graphic design. I will only add that  it's obvious to me that you've placed far too much weight on formal education. Of course you're disappointed. Formal education is only a supplement to the learning process. Maybe 25% of the entire journey to becoming a great designer. The beauty of graphic design is that it is not held captive by the "experts". Anyone can produce great designs by putting in the time and the care, you don't have to wait on someone else to tell you how to do it.You mentioned that your portfolio is not good... I'm sorry to say this, but that isn't anyone's fault but your own. If it isn't good, make it better. That's not your university's fault or your instructor. Again, design is ruthlessly meritocratic. If you're an aspiring graphic designer, you're likely a creative person. Therefore, you should come up with your own projects, redesign bad designs you find in the world, make your own opportunities. That will result in a much stronger portfolio and demonstrate your resolve. Don't depend on your education to carry you on a pillow to your dream job. That simply isn't the world we live in today.

Is Graphic Design a good career choice?

You're right on, my man. It is very competitive, and the market is oversaturated with "designers." Just remember there are designers and there are people who have a copy of Photoshop. Not exactly the same thing. If you do get into it, be a thoughtful, disciplined designer, and you will go far. Get all of the fundamentals down because design is not about the latest software.

For anyone who thinks there isn't much competition, check out how many companies are advertising on my blog alone:
http://examplify.blogspot.com/

And those are just the ones who are buying advertising. Look at craigslist and freelance designers.com. 10 times as much.

In any case, best of luck to you.

Is Graphic design really a good career path?

Im really into art and love it, but there is a constant question i go through in my head? is it really a good career path. I've done some researching and notice it is very hard to make it in this field and also the pay is very little. Average salary for designers are about 26-35 grand a year. Also there are so many people in this field who are trying to make it in it. I feel this career path would be very hard even though i love art alot. Yeah i know what you guys are thinking, You belief you should always do a job that you'll enjoy in your life but what is their to enjoy if you know you might not possibly make it or even make enough money to start a family or go on vacations and have fun with your life. I was wondering also if i choose graphic design as a career will my eye sight decrease due to constant use of the computer? What good is design when your hurting the tool you use most for it which is your eyes. Ya ya i know thats why their are glasses and laser surgery and etc. Believe i doubt no one would want to go through any of those.

I just want your guys opinions if its really a good choice. Im sorry if im being a little to dramatic but i just want to know more about this business.

Thank you guys and gals for taking your time to read this.
