Guinea Pig Coughing/wheezing And Sneezing

My ferret is wheezing, sneezing and shivering?

He's about a year and a half, male REW... he's only been doing it for the past week or so. My other ferret is fine, happy and hyper as ever, but Gilan is acting sick...ish. He still plays but without much gusto. It seems like he's been eating fine.

Also, I've had my AC on for the past couple weeks, cause I heard ferrets can die quickly of heat exhaustion, but they both have a bed (even though they sleep together) and they have a couple blankets. Should I add more blankets? Maybe cover the top level of the cage with a blanket?

Guinea pig has cough, what's wrong?

Occasional guinea pig coughing (sounds like a hacking up or choking noise) is normal. Guinea pigs are not able to vomit, so when they eat to fast, they instead hack their food back up.
However, if it is suddenly happening more than usual, I would consider it as a URI (Upper Respiratory Infection). URI is the leading cause of death in guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are prey animals in the wild, so they can hide their illnesses. If your guinea pig is coughing occasionally (once a day). Then there is nothing to worry about. If he is coughing more than once a day I would advise you to take him to a Vet.

Signs of a URI:
*Refusal to eat or drink (anorexia)
*No feces (as a result of not eating)
*Labored breathing, wheezing
*Sneezing, coughing
*Crusty eyes, eyes that are almost sealed shut
*Discharge from eyes or nose

See a vet immediately if you see any of these signs. Because URIs are so deadly and fast moving, it is imperative that the vet rules out a URI before considering the possibility of an allergy.

I hope this helps!

Guinea pig wheezing occasionally?

She's two years old and is eating normally (she's actually a little overweight), but recently she's developed a wheeze. It lasts for a few minutes, and stops. She sneezes occasionally, but not more than is normal. I've got a vets appointment in an hour, but I'm not sure whether she needs to go! Would an URI only show constant wheezing? I've also read about heart problems causing occasional wheezing but it was a very brief article and lacked detailed symptoms.
I'd rather not put her through the stress of travelling if there's nothing wrong, but equally I don't want her to deteriorate if there IS a problem! Does anyone else have an occasional wheezer? Is this normal?
Thanks.

My baby guinea pig sneezes alot...........?

he is about 2-3 months old. He seems perfectly healthy and active. He just sneezes alot (alot meaning probably once every 5 minutes when we're holding him)...is this normal?

My guinea pig is sneezing a lot is it serious?

my guinea pig sneezing a lot she doesn't cough a lot maybe once at night but she seems perfectly fine. She doesn't refuse to eat any of her food or has anything coming out of her nose. She doesn't make any wheezing noises. I got her about maybe one or two weeks ago and it could be because shes getting used to her new home but i want to make sure it isn't anything serious before it becomes serious. The doctors I've called say it doesn't sound all that serious but i'm just not convinced. But guinea pig are very good at hiding if they're sick or not, any ideas on what's wrong, if anything?

My guinea pig makes a weird noise when breathing?

This could actually be good, or bad. Some guinea pigs will snore, breathe harder (or softer), breathe faster (or slower), get hiccups, or develop respiratory problems. Jackiesguineapigs says, "Check your guinea pigs breathing, it should be quiet and not be laboured. If you hear a clicking sound or any changes with their breathing, it could be a respiratory problem. Please don't delay taking your guinea pig to the vets if you suspect a breathing problem." This is true, but first you should decide if it IS a respiratory problem or not.

To decide this, you should see whether or not she has the symptoms of a respirtory illness. These symptoms include Crusty eyes, Watery eyes, Cloudy eyes, Receding eyes, Protruding eyes, Ulcerated eyes. These symptoms can mean that your guinea pig may have Upper Respiratory Infection, Injury, Abscess, Tooth Problem, Dehydration/Illness, Cataracts, or diabetes.

Upper Respiratory Infection (URI)
Refusal to eat or drink, no feces (as a result of not eating), Labored breathing, wheezing, Sneezing, coughing, Crusty eyes, eyes that are almost sealed shut, Discharge from eyes or nose, Dull and/or receding eyes, Rough or puffed-up coat, Lethargy, hunched posture.

Out of all the choices, I only decided to describe the URI. This is because the others are sort-of irrelevant, but incase you would like to know more about them, you can check jackiesguineapigs or Peter Gurney's Guinea Pig Health Guide (just google em!).

Also, my guinea pig snores when she sleeps, believed to be because of how overweight she is. If your concerned about your guineapig having a URI, call your vet and ask them for their opinion before setting up an appointment. Don't forget that guinea pigs can also choke, cough, sneeze, and hiccup!

My guinea pig has the sniffles what should I do??

If it has labored breathing, sneezing, eye/nose discharge, coughing or wheezing, it is most likely has a bacterial infection called an upper respiratory infection (URI). URI's progress quickly and are nearly always fatal if left untreated, so get your little piggy to a vet right away. The vet will prescribe an antibiotic to treat the infection.

Best of luck!

NOTE: Guinea pigs do not get cold viruses. See link below.
