You don't have an appointment.The doctor has a list of patients waiting for him/her.The doctor cannot be sure it's really you on the other line.The doctor may want to discuss results further that may take longer over the phone.The doctor wants to reexamine you for a follow up and discuss your results.The doctor may need to order further tests because the initial results all came back inconclusive.The doctor wants to tell you they're retiring.The doctor wants to see your glowing smiling face.There are an endless number of reasons why your doctor would call you in.I had a doctor (retired now) who had a policy for everyone that prescription refills and test results are never given over the phone. I asked to be tested for “everything” and I was called in. He came in as his usual self, happy, smiling. Then he told me he had good news and bad news. My heart sunk to the floor. My immediate thought was I have HIV. It wasn't as dramatic as I pictured it.He said the good news was I don't have HIV or any STDs. The bad news is you can never get viral hepatitis.I was confused about why he thought that was bad news. My doc said the bad news was because he now had to do more investigative work to find out the reason why. The bad news was for him! Apparently my entire family has a natural immunity to viral hepatitis. Cool, huh?

My Widal test result shows 1:80 for O and H (S.typhi). Do I have severe typhoid? Do I need to be hospitalized?
No. You don't have severe typhoid unless the clinical symptoms suggest otherwise.Widal test is an old diagnostic test obsolete in developed countries, but the most common test in developing countries like India, Pakistan etc.At the rural hospital where I worked for 2 months, 40% of total patients have symptoms of typhoid and this makes this test too useful here.In more than 90% of cases, if titre values for Salmonella type ‘O’ and ‘H’ are below 1/80, the patient is ruled out for typhoid, but given antibiotics to prevent him from being infected severely. The clinical diagnosis comes into play when we see titre of 1/80, but other signs are suggesting typhoid.But when titre shows 1/160, more than 80% patients show serious signs of Typhoid, most common being Fever with chills! So the report makes it easier for us to admit patients who may have escaped clinical diagnosis of typhoid.

Gooman - Your RBC results suggest a possibility of pregnancy. If so, you have a false type of anemia due to your body holding on to excess fluid even though you consider yourself hydrated. This is common in pregnancy and a form of haemodilution. If you had a true anemia your RBCs would likely be hypochromic and macrocytic with a lowered haemoglobin. Ask your gynecologist/obstetrician about this. Gooman - Since you are absolutely NOT pregnant, there is a lab error somewhere as your given good description does not fit any of the hundreds of anemias I have seen. IF YOU CAN, GET THE TESTING LAB'S PATHOLOGIST MD to try and explain the weird results, perhaps also doing some repeat CBC testing. Good luck.
