You cannot. You should own your work by putting it out there, and the petty bullshit thieves will always find a way to steal, but you cannot let that stop you.People have stolen my ideas and sometimes I have tracked them down and they have apologized and/or thanked me, but none have ever confessed to having stolen it. They always say something like, “I loved what you did so I took the basic idea and made it my own.” I’ve shown both works to friends in silence, after saying, “I want to show you two things and then tell me if you have any thoughts.” Every time, the viewers turn to me after and say, “Those people stole your work.” I’ve gotten used to that, although it used to bother me.But none of the thieves have ever admitted that they steal. This is a reality. Let’s take the case of comedian Denis Leary: He is alive and successful and he became well known because he stole other people’s jokes and never ever apologized. His defense is always full of ego and condescension and he never admits that he stole, but it is easy to find direct evidence.
