Depends, most new Metallica fans get started on Black Album. The songs are simpler and very catchy: however, it's not their best album, their technical skills have been stripped down for more radio friendly metal. Nonetheless it's still a great starting point for new Metallica fans. However, once you get into their albums before the Black Album, you realize that it's really quite mediocre in comparison. If you don't want to get started with Black Album, then Ride The Lightning is the next best album to start with.
