Has Army Basic Combat Training Been Shortened

Shorten or Lengthen Basic training/boot camp?

I can really only take it in perspective as an Airman and going through AF BMT, but I'm assuming Marines, Navy, and Army are pretty similar methods.

So, AF BMT it's 8.5 weeks.
Week 0-5 is drill mashed into your skulls until you master it, you do some SABC, SERE, and CBRN training. Practice hand to hand combat and rifle drills, basic customs and courtesies, PT everyday, uniform wear and UCMJ and so forth. Just your basics to make you an Airman in the modern Air Force.

So that's week 0-5.

What Army National Guard MOS has the shortest AIT training?

As said, probably 11B. But if you’re planning to join, don’t choose an MOS because of short training time. You’ll hate it and be miserable. Pick something you’ll like and can eventually make money at. If you want to be 11B then go for it. But like I said, don’t choose on shortness of training.

How do fat and out-of-shape people make it through basic training?

When I joined in 1974, I was 5′8″ and 245 lbs. After we met our Drill SGT., he divided us in two groups. After he was done, he explained, “Over here I have my athletes - fine specimens of young men- MY ADONIS’ … AND over here I have my PILSBURY DOUGHBOYS ! Gentlemen, and this will be the last time I will call you f**k’n maggots Gentlemen!!!IN 12 WEEKS TIME, YOU WILL BE MY ‘OTHER’ ADONIS’ !!! …NOW STRIP DOWN TO YOUR SKIVVIES AND PUT YOUR PONCHO ON!” We did and then he told us to get DRESSED OVER TOP OF THE PONCHO!!!I think he was the one that invented the ‘SAUNA SUIT’. We did that every day and the only thing we could eat was SALADS -NO DRESSINGS- just rabbit and squirrel food and water. The fat melted off and at the Graduation… I weighed 155 lbs. and then I went to get a thick steak and baked potato!!!I kept it off all these years. The most I weighed since then was 180 lbs. but took it off soon after.

Why do most civilians think Army basic training is called boot camp?

People are ignorant. They do not realize there is the Military (Army and Air Force), and the Naval Service (Navy and Marine Corps), and that these traditions have different vocabulary. So, everyone thinks “basic training” “Initial Entry Training” etc are all “boot camps”.The term boot camp dates back to WWI, or maybe even earlier, and was used solely by the Navy and Marine Corps until after WWII.Most people do not understand that prior to WWII, we did not have a professional Army. The constitution was followed, and congress used the National Guard (as it was so named during WWI) to fill the ranks of the Army in WWII, WWI, and all previous wars. The Army went in and reinvented itself after WWII. The first thing that happened was that it turned over the job of “amphibious assault” to the Marine Corps, as they had perfected the technique by the end of WWII. The Army Air Corps was moved out of the Army, and was the foundation for the Air Force. The Army in an effort to make itself distinct created the Green Army uniform, and started to implement professional standards for its people. Thus they stopped calling Initial Entry Training boot camp, and started calling it basic military training, which was eventually shortened to basic training. The Air Force still uses the term Basic Military Training. The follow on school for your MOS was labelled Advanced Individual Training, AIT, and the term is currently used today even though most combat arms training is done as an “OSUT”, or “One Station Unit Training”, and is considered one giant block of training.Korea, and then Vietnam, put a big kibosh on some of the professional development standards of the Army, but in the 1970s the army was finally able to make the transition to an all-volunteer and professional army.

Army corrective training Essay limits.?

Ok long story short I got into it with my Squad leader here in Iraq. I should have just kept my mouth shut and said "roger" to everything he said and addressed it higher up later. But I didn't. My punishment for disrespecting a Non commissioned Officer is to write a 5,000 per Army Value essay. That is 35,000 words. Due by 0900 the following day. If I fail that, the next corrective training is 10,000 words per Army Value.

The exact words typed on my 4856 under plan of action:
" SM will write 5000 word essay on each of the Army seven values. Which will be turned in to me no later than 0900 on 06APR2011, so that I may read them. If you fail to meet this suspense the 5000 words will be 10000 words and will be due the following day."

Yes I messed up. It was the 1st time I have ever disrespected an NCO. I am fully aware they are making an example of me and I am by no means looking to get out of this corrective training. HOWEVER, isn't there a regulation set in place that states an NCO cannot enforce a corrective training if they themselves could not accomplish it? I asked him verbally if he could do 35,000 words in 48 hours and he laughed and smiled, then continued reading me my counseling. Look, this guy is not the brightest crayon in the box. For the month of March, I wrote out the counselings for the Joes, and he put his name on them. I can write and outstanding essay and intend to do so. However I believe 35,000 words while in Iraq is excessive. And like I said, I have no confidence this guy himself can do it.

If anybody could point me in the correct direction as far as where to find anything to back up my suspicions I'd be be very grate full. Thank you for your time.
